Polar Stratospheric Clouds (PSCs), also known as nacreous clouds, are rare, high-altitude clouds that form in the stratosphere, typically at altitudes of 15–25 km (9–16 miles). They are most commonly seen in polar regions during winter, especially in Scandinavia, Canada, and Antarctica.

These clouds are famous for their striking iridescent colors, which result from the diffraction of sunlight by tiny ice particles. They appear just before sunrise or after sunset when the sun is below the horizon, giving them a glowing, pearl-like appearance—hence the name “nacreous” (meaning pearly).

PSCs play a significant role in atmospheric chemistry, particularly in ozone depletion. The clouds provide a surface for chemical reactions that lead to the breakdown of ozone, contributing to the formation of the ozone hole.

Lofoten is known for its colourful houses, including traditional red, white, and yellow fisherman cabins (Rorbuer). Yellow houses are less common than the iconic red ones but can still be found, often standing out beautifully against the dramatic landscapes of mountains and fjords. Many of these homes are located in picturesque villages like Reine, Henningsvær, and Sakrisøy.
