Meet Gary Tan, the proud owner of the century-old Kedai Kopitiam Kong Thai Lai. Established in 1920, this beloved spot has been serving locals and visitors for generations. Under Gary's care, the Kopitiam remains a cherished breakfast destination for its homemade kaya butter toast and Hainanese-style coffee, which is delicious, budget-friendly, and satisfying.

Gary's dedication to traditional preparation methods ensures that Kong Thai Lai Kopitiam remains a living part of Penang's heritage. He meticulously crafts kaya from scratch and upholds the tradition of weekly mahjong sessions that began with his father. Meanwhile, the kopitiam's unique Penang retro vibe is lovingly preserved with furniture passed down through generations, creating a nostalgic and authentic atmosphere that bridges the past with the present.

Meet Mohammed Meera Sahib, the third-generation owner who oversees one of Penang's most thriving spice retailers. Having been involved in the store since childhood, Mohammed has witnessed the evolution of the spice trade, from the days of wooden carriages to the modern era. Over the years, generations of families from across the island have come to his shop, drawn by the special spice blends like biryani masala, garam masala, and kurma.

Spices are deeply intertwined with Penang's history. In the early 19th century, the island once served as the center of the spice trade for Southeast Asia. Spice shops like Mohammed's stand as a testament to the vital role of spices in local culinary heritage, offering insights into the regional migration and historical significance that shaped Penang into a bustling trading hub.

Next time you’re in Georgetown, drop by his store to pick up a special spice mix and bring the vibrant flavors and rich heritage of Penang straight to your kitchen!

At Ceritalah, our content is guided by the invaluable insights of site custodians. Cultural heritage goes beyond physical sites and monuments; it encompasses social customs, belief systems, traditional knowledge, and much more.

A site custodian serves as a long-term guardian, caring for and managing heritage with deep responsibility. By working closely with them, we bring their lived experiences to life in the Ceritalah AR Memory Boxes you can find and discover around town.

Stay tuned for our upcoming social media mini-series, where we’ll share more stories directly from our dedicated storytellers.

Our heartfelt thanks go to Dr. Tan for coordinating last weekend’s digital storytelling workshop for seniors in celebration of Merdeka.

As part of Bengkel Teknologi Senior, we had the privilege of leading a digitisation workshop where participants shared their stories and learned how to create 3D scans and document the stories related to their personal items.

We are profoundly grateful to COEX, our venue sponsor, Switch, for sponsoring the devices that made this workshop possible and to MMU Faculty of Cinematic Arts for their expert assistance in recording our seniors' stories.

Most importantly, we sincerely thank our participants for their willingness to share and their openness to explore new ways of storytelling!
