Nestled in the heart of George Town, The World Optical Company has not only been a purveyor of vision but also a silent custodian of history. Since its establishment in 1934, the company has had the privilege of serving a host of distinguished individuals, with its Bausch & Lomb eye refractor set with The Green refractor head playing a pivotal role in their care.
This venerable instrument, manufactured starting from the 1930s, has been an integral part of the company's legacy, witnessing the ebb and flow of time from its inception until 2018 when the company transitioned to a new outlet.
In 1947, the late 27th Sultan of Kedah, Sultan Sir Badlishah ibni Almarhum Sultan Abdul Hamid Halim, graced the company with his presence. His visit marked a momentous occasion, as he entrusted his vision to the precision of the Green refractor head.
Years later, in 1974/75, another royal figure, the late 28th Sultan of Kedah, Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah—who was also serving as the King (Agong) of Malaysia at that time—sought the expertise of The World Optical Company. The Green refractor head once again proved its worth, offering regal service befitting a monarch.
The company's reputation for excellence continued to attract prominent figures, including Malaysia's first Prime Minister, the late Tunku Abdul Rahman, in 1985. A photograph captures this historic moment: Tunku Abdul Rahman seated alongside Mr. Johnson Lam, with the iconic refractor set standing as a testament to their encounter.
In the early 1980s, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, who would become Malaysia's fourth Prime Minister, also experienced the meticulous care provided by The World Optical Company. The Green refractor head was instrumental in ensuring that even those who shaped the nation's future could see it clearly.
These illustrious patrons are woven into the fabric of The World Optical Company's story—a narrative that speaks of dedication to optical excellence and a commitment to serving those who have shaped Malaysia's history.
As visitors walk through the museum today, they are not just observing an optical instrument; they are witnessing a piece of national heritage—a bridge between eras and a beacon that illuminated paths for leaders who guided Malaysia through pivotal moments in time.
