Look closely—there are two of them hiding in the tree. 👀

These are Small-toothed Palm Civets (Arctogalidia trivirgata), nocturnal mammals that spend most of their time in the forest canopy.

They can be recognised by their dark faces, long tails and faint stripes along the back. As omnivores, they feed mainly on fruits, insects and small animals. Seeing two together like this made the encounter even more special.

Come explore Borneo with us and see what you might find along the way.

The view is the reward—but the journey is what makes it memorable.

The 5D4N Maliau Basin Full Loop Trek begins with a demanding climb from Agathis to Nepenthes Camp. After hours on the trail, the 33-metre observation platform offers a wide view across the forest canopy and a quiet place to appreciate how far you have travelled. The journey continues towards Ginseng Camp, passing through changing forest types where pitcher plants, Rafflesia and other unique flora may be found. A refreshing stop at Ginseng Falls marks the end of another full day on foot.

Then comes the moment everyone has been walking towards—Maliau Falls. Reaching the seven-tiered waterfall after days of trekking makes the view feel even more meaningful. This is not simply a visit to Maliau Basin. It is a journey you complete one trail, one camp and one step at a time.

Two Great Slaty Woodpeckers spotted high in the canopy.

We heard their calls before we saw them. A few moments later, this pair appeared on the same tree and gave us just enough time to capture the moment.

The Great Slaty Woodpecker (Mulleripicus pulverulentus) is one of the largest woodpeckers in the world. It can be recognised by its large size, long neck, dark grey body and pale head. The male has a small red patch near the base of its bill, while the female does not.

It usually moves in pairs or small groups, using its strong bill to search tree trunks for ants, termites and other insects.

Next time you are in the forest, listen carefully and remember to look up. Would you like to see this bird in the wild?

Can you spot the hidden hunter? 🐍

Perfectly camouflaged among the fallen leaves, this reticulated python (Malayopython reticulatus) moves quietly across the forest floor. Its intricate pattern helps it blend naturally into the leaf litter, making it difficult to notice even from a short distance.

This species is non-venomous and relies on its powerful body to constrict its prey. Encounters like this remind us to observe every corner of the rainforest—wildlife may be closer than we think.

Join our wildlife safari and discover what could be hiding along the trail.

Celebrating Primates

International Primate Day is a reminder of the incredible diversity of primates around the world and the important role they play in maintaining healthy ecosystems.

It is also a day to raise awareness of the challenges many primate species face and the conservation efforts working to protect their future.

Every species is unique. Every one has a role in nature. And every one is worth protecting.
