It’s called a Spiderhunter, but what’s that red fruit in its beak? 🔴🐦

Meet the Bornean Spiderhunter (Arachnothera everetti). Its long, curved bill helps it reach nectar deep inside flowers. It also feeds on small insects and other arthropods.

Fun fact: Despite its name, this bird doesn’t eat only spiders. This photo catches a different moment: a tiny red fruit balanced at the tip of its bill.

Look for ripe figs, and you might spot this squirrel. 🐿️

Meet the Sabah form of Prevost’s squirrel (Callosciurus prevostii).

Borneo has 36 species of squirrels, including 14 nocturnal flying squirrels. Among them, Prevost’s squirrel is described as the most frugivorous—meaning its diet is especially focused on fruit. It is also the squirrel most often seen feeding on ripe figs.

On your next forest walk, take a moment to watch the branches around a fruiting fig tree. You might catch one feeding before it moves out of sight.

That long tail has more than one job. 🐿️

The Prevost’s squirrel uses its tail to stay balanced while climbing, running along branches and jumping between trees. Its sharp claws help it grip the bark, allowing it to move confidently across tree trunks.

When it settles down at night, it wraps its tail around its body for warmth. It rests in tree hollows or nests made from leaves and twigs.
