Orangutans are unique to the rainforests of Borneo and Sumatra. Some males develop flanges, large, fleshy cheek pads that develop as they mature. These features serve to amplify vocalizations and signal dominance and health to potential mates and rivals. These intelligent primates are primarily arboreal and exhibit remarkable problem-solving skills.

Bornean elephants, a subspecies of the Asian elephant, are known for their smaller size compared to African elephants. One notable difference is their ears: Bornean elephants have relatively smaller ears, which are not as large or fan-shaped as those of African elephants. The larger ears of African elephants help with thermoregulation, allowing them to dissipate heat in their warmer habitats. In contrast, the smaller ears of Bornean elephants are better suited to the humid tropical environment of Borneo.

Muller’s gibbon is endemic to Borneo and found in the rainforests of Kalimantan. They live high in the canopy, swinging gracefully from branch to branch using their long arms, a movement called brachiation. They live in tight-knit, monogamous family groups. Mothers form deep bonds with their infants, carrying them constantly in the early months and nursing them for up to two years. Young gibbons stay close to their mothers until they reach independence at around 6–8 years old.
