Meet the Bornean Frogmouth - Borneo's undisputed master of disguise and one of the most mind-blowing endemic species this island has to offer!

Fun fact: The Frogmouth doesn't rely on speed or agility to survive. Instead, it freezes perfectly still and relies on its bark-like mottled plumage to become virtually indistinguishable from a broken tree branch. It doesn't flee from danger. It simply... becomes the tree 🫪

A nocturnal ambush hunter, it also sports that wide, gaping frog-like mouth to snap up insects, lizards, and frogs in the dark of night.

In the forests of Borneo, not everything that looks like a branch is a branch so look closer ~

Fun fact: Unlike its fish-hunting cousins, this forest kingfisher has no interest in water. It hunts lizards, insects, and small invertebrates deep within the rainforest interior, making it one of the most unique and unexpected members of the kingfisher family 🦎👑
