Get • In the pitch-black darkness, there really isn’t much to see on the lonely stretch of road upon which Muhammad Mustaqim Rosden, 27, finds himself standing.

Looking at the ground, the only things visible are the rows of glow-in-the-dark road markings. But when the avid astrophotographer directs his gaze above, he sees exactly what he’s come here for: the Milky Way.

Now is a good time for such trips because of the Milky Way season, which occurs yearly from March to September.

Technically, this is the Summer Milky Way season, which is more popular than the Winter Milky Way season – November to February – as the galactic core is highly visible during the summer period.

✨ LAST MINUTE STARGAZING @ SUNGAI KOYAN 2D1N ✨

Listed as Bortle Class 2 on the light pollution map 🌌
We timed this trip with the new moon and a stretch of promising weather with minimal cloud cover — and it gave us exactly what we’ve been craving.

That said, we did notice light pollution creeping in along the far horizon, possibly from nearby towns like Raub. A quiet reminder that even our darkest skies are under threat.

Nonetheless, this journey was still deeply enjoyable and memorable. From the cozy chalet and peaceful campsite, to the flowing river, dense jungle, scenic roads, and the journey itself. From the warmth and hospitality of the local Orang Asli community, to fresh durian, and of course, the starry sky that still shines above Sungai Koyan ✨

We truly enjoyed every moment here and look forward to returning again. Hopefully next time, we’ll announce it earlier, not so last-minute, so more people can experience and appreciate this place together 🌌

✨ LAST MINUTE STARGAZING @ SUNGAI KOYAN ✨

We’ve been dreaming of clear skies for months.
Since last year, the weather across Southeast Asia has been extra wet, cloudy, and unpredictable. Night after night of waiting, hoping, postponing.

So when the new moon aligned with a rare stretch of clear weather, we took the chance. Last minute. No overthinking 🌌

And Sungai Koyan gave us what we’d been craving.
A clear winter sky, stars spilling across the darkness, familiar faces returning, new faces joining, all of us looking up in quiet awe.

That night reminded us why we do this.
The journey, the jungle, the river, the chalet, the warmth of the local Orang Asli community, the durian, the laughter, and the sky above.
It made us feel alive again ✨

Thankful to everyone who trusted a spontaneous plan and shared this sky with us.
We’ll do this again. Hopefully with more notice next time 🌌
