A short getaway to Kuala Pilah @ Kolo Pilah, Jan 2026

Stayed at Casa Menanti at Kg Lereng, Seri Menanti.
6 rooms with cabin style and tasteful decor. Comfortably sleeps 2 persons. A bit crowded with a third person on a thick big mattress. All the rooms face 2 pools for adults and kids.

A simple hearty home cooked breakfast is inclusive in the room rate. Eaten at a patio overlooking the rooms with a prefect view of the Bukit Sikai - so serene, peaceful with a feeling of close to nature. Soothing to the body and soul ! The patio also has a mini pantry and cuckoo water dispenser with complimentary instant noodles, bread and 3 in 1 drinks to be eaten and drink at the property.

A wooden house situated adjacent and overlooking the rooms is the private home of the owners, Mr Sabri and Mrs Sharifah. They are a friendly and accommodating couple. They treat us to a fruit platter of durian, langsat and mangosteen. However, underneath the house are a few tables and chairs for the guests.

In the evening, I sat at the table place in front of my room. Breathing in the fresh air, eating fruits and brownies, drinking a mug of hot tea. A home away from home ! Blessed the weather ! Syukur alhamdulilah 🤲🏼🤲🏼

Next day is Ronda2 Kampung to visit the small industries Stingless Bees (Lebah Kelulut) and Giant Freshwater Prawn (Udang Galah), a home of a famous local celebrity with a "Lord of the Rings" vibe and a swim at a secluded waterfall.

Things done and to do at Kolo Pilah.. 2 nights at Casa Menanti 🫶.. Ronda2 Kampung Lereng 🫶.. Tram ride around Kampung Lonek 👇🏼

When at Kampung Lereng, I see foothills of Bukit Sikai, a flock
of sheep scramble along the narrow roads when our 8 seater buggy tailed by a 2 seater ATV pass by and "Monantu Omak ekau bolah kelapo mudo" .

But at a nearby Kampung Lonek, I see lush green to golden yellow paddy fields and yonder view of mountain ranges and traditional Minangkau houses with huge compound. This time I was on a 12 seater buggy drive to 2 small industries - Lonek Mee Kuning and The Lonek Delish. The former makes and sells Tofu and non preservative Yellow Noodle whereas the latter sells Kuih Karas, Biskut Kelapa and Biskut Lutut.

Now who says there is nothing to see and do in Kolo Pilah, you are wrong !!

Fireflies & Blue Tears tours

My comments of 15 May 2022 Fireflies Tours by NYC Tours and Travel

Location : At the estuary of Selangor River. - Lot of activities throughout day and night causing sound and smoke pollution that can disrupt the fireflies habitat.

Means of transport : 30 seater speed boat. Difficult to manoeuvre the boat creating lots of water movements. Hence during the tour, only one side of the boat witness the fireflies activities.

Duration : 40 minutes (no commentaries by the captain). So you must rely on Mr Google for informations of the tour.

My rating : * (out of 5 stars)

I would rather go to Kampung Kuantan and Kampung Belimbang to see the Fireflies.

The Fireflies tour operators at Kampung Kuantan and Kampung Belimbing use a 6 to 8 seater wooden sampan and low powered fabric boat respectively along banks of the Selangor River

These transport are able to move closer to the Berembang trees, a type of mangrove trees that grows naturally in the brackish waters, where the fireflies love to congregate.

Hence, the sighting of the fireflies at both sites are more natural and overwhelming. The best time is after 8pm on a clear moonless night. After that, the males have already found its mate, causing them to stop flashing.

Positive : A picturesque sunset view and wooden houses on stilts (relic from another era) that depicts a calmer and laidback pace of life.

My comments on the Blue Tears tour.
Actually I was looking forward to this new tour but again it was a great letdown.

After the disappointed Fireflies tour, the Captain again stop the engine in the middle of the river, placed long sticks with a net at the end in the middle of the boat and told the group in fast unclear Chinese. Most of the Chinese tourist were left dazed and confused until he conveyed the instructions to the nearest Chinese tourist who translate it in English and Malay.

We need to use the net to stir up the water so that Blue Tears is visible. This activity lasted only a few minutes.

Teluk Cempedak Beach and Teluk Tongkang Beach, Pahang

This popular beach amongst locals during weekend is only 5 kilometers from Kuantan town.

It is a casual hang out with food court selling affordable food and souvenirs, buskers activity, roller skaters and caricature artist during the day time.

A friendly reminder; please supervised your children not to play around unattended at this beach especially during the windy and rainy monsoon season. For strong swimmers, please be advised that the ocean floor ends suddenly.

However, there is a secret beach where you can swim with no worries. After the stalls and at the site of buskers, there is a wooden pathway along the hillsides and jungles leading to Teluk Tongkang. Watch out for the monkeys especially when you are holding a McDonald Sundae Cone.

A different beach experience along this short stretch beachfront facing the South China Sea.

Kuala Ibai Beach, Terengganu

Beautiful, peaceful and quiet are three words to describe when you are at this rather secluded and short stretch of beach.

This beach is situated in Kuala Ibai Village, about 5 kilometer south of the Kuala Terengganu city.

Landmark is the floating Tengku Tengah Zaharah Mosque built by a local Architect Raja Kamarul Bahrin Shah Raja Ahmad.

Nobody should miss this beautiful mosque in the blue lagoon of Kuala Ibai. Actually it is not only the mosque itself which is beautifully and unique in design but the setting of the mosque itself which is in the middle of calm lagoon. Sitting in the mosque or strolling around the aisle of the mosque , you can feel the soft breeze coming from the sea and the lagoon is so beautiful especially in the morning hour when the sun is in the horizon and the serenity of the surrounding lagoon is carresing your soul. Actually this mosque is in a beautiful complex along Terengganu beach with jogging track winding through waterways and mangrove..you can have picnic under casuarina trees and enjoy the view of the mosque from a distance. It will be so memorable.

Mosques in Kuala Lipis

Masjid Negeri Lama
This old State Mosque is located at the sharp corner at Jalan Masjid Lama Kuala Lipis of the old town along the riverfront.

It is one of oldest mosque in Malaysia built in 1888 by an Arab Yemen trader named Habib Hassan.

The mosque was named Masjid Negeri because Kuala Lipis was originally the State Capital before it shifted to Kuantan.

It is a simple mosque with no grand architecture. It is more like a small bungalow. Nevertheless, it is a typical house of worship of yesteryears.

Masjid Sultan Mahmud
This Sultan Mahmud Mosque was built in 1970 based on Modular Mosque design which is popular in the 1960s - 1970s era.

As you enter the Kuala Lipis town, this grand Mosque is visible as it is located on a small hill. Just follow your heart. No waze is necessary.

Recently renovated in 2016 with spacious prayer halls and courtyards, thick fluffy carpets, ample parking in the mosque compound and at the foothill, fully airconditioned and clean toilets and ablution areas. Yes, I do check the toilets although Nature doesn't call.
