Can you live in Malaysia on $2,000 a month? 🇲🇾
Short answer: yes. But it depends on what kind of life you want.

Solo and living lean: $1,200 to $1,800 gets you a decent condo, local food, Grab rides, and utilities in most cities outside central KL.

Couple or more flexibility: $2,000 to $3,000 opens up better neighbourhoods, eating out, gym, and weekend trips.

Family with kids in international school: $5,000+ because fees alone range from RM 25,000 to RM 142,000 per year.
The food here is unbeatable.

A full hawker meal is RM 8 to 15. A GP visit is RM 70 to 90. Private health insurance runs about RM 470 per month. It's not free for foreigners, but it's a fraction of what you'd pay back home.

I made a full video breaking this down for retirees on my YouTube. Link in bio for the deep dive.

Comment "MOVE" and I'll send you my free Malaysia STARTER KIT covering visas, property, cost of living, and neighbourhoods.

Yes, I know im bursting your bubble but it's true. MM2H is a retirement visa. If you plan to work, then you need a different visa, something like PVIP which gives you 20 years and allows you to live like a local.

But if you dont plan on working in Malaysia, then the De Rantau may be best for you.

2. Masjid Negara (National Mosque) — Kuala Lumpur
3. Masjid Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah (Blue Mosque) — Shah Alam, Selangor
4. Masjid Kristal (Crystal Mosque) — Kuala Terengganu, Terengganu

Instagram is lying to you about KLCC.

It looks incredible on reels. High-rise views. Infinity pools. Rooftop bars. Skyline shots.

But what those reels don’t show you:

1️⃣ Daily traffic that drains your energy.
2️⃣ Constant construction, noise and nightlife.
3️⃣ Smaller units at premium prices.
4️⃣ Crowds everywhere — lifts, malls, cafes, parking.
5️⃣ A lifestyle designed for business and tourism, not long-term living.

Many people move there first…
Then quietly move out within a year.

If you actually want calm, practical, and sustainable living in Malaysia, here are 10 places you should consider beyond KLCC 👇

1. Cyberjaya: Planned, green, and organized. Perfect for remote workers and families who want space and less chaos. It feels structured and peaceful compared to central KL.
2. Subang Jaya: Mature and practical. Everything is already built here — schools, hospitals, malls, food spots. It’s not flashy, but it works.
3. Ara Damansara: Balanced lifestyle. Close to PJ and KL but quieter than city center. Great for professionals and small families who want connectivity without madness.
4. Desa ParkCity: Clean, premium, and very community-driven. Big parks, walkable streets, and a relaxed vibe. It feels like a bubble inside the city.
5. Bangi (Bandar Baru Bangi): Family-focused and calm. Affordable landed homes and strong community feel. Long-term friendly, especially for Muslim expats.
6. Kota Kemuning: Pure suburban lifestyle. Gated neighborhoods, greenery, golf courses, and space. Ideal if you want landed property and quiet evenings.
7. Damansara Heights: Upscale but not chaotic. Mostly landed homes with privacy and greenery. Premium feel without KLCC-level noise.
8. Penang (George Town area): Slower pace with heritage charm. Great food, strong expat scene, coastal lifestyle. Feels livable, not overwhelming.
9. Malacca: Historic, relaxed, and affordable. Not as fast-paced as KL. Good for retirees or those who want a quieter rhythm.
10. Johor Bahru: Strategic and growing. Close to Singapore, more affordable housing options. Good for families and cross-border professionals.

The smartest move isn’t choosing the most photographed skyline.
It’s choosing the city that fits your lifestyle, work pattern and long-term plan.
