Finally a free lunch? Here, a Four-clawed Gecko (Gehyra mutilata), having waited patiently below several feeding lanternflies (Pyrops intricatus), is rewarded with a spritz of sweet fluid. By means of their stout proboscis, lanternflies are able to pierce bark and feed on a tree’s phloem – a great resource, but they end up with far more sugary water than they need for themselves. The excess is excreted, and then exploited by those who have learned to take advantage of this free handout. Although I have documented this rare behavior before in northern Borneo, this is the first record involving this particular species of Pyrops, and the first observed during daylight.
