Starting next year, Malaysian citizens must obtain an online authorization from the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) before travelling, if they wish to enter a European country, whether in the Schengen area or a member state of the European Union.
ETIAS is an electronic system used to conduct detailed security checks on each applicant to ensure that these immigrants do not pose a security threat.
The launch, originally scheduled for November this year, has been pushed back to 2024. The "EU Travel Information and Authorization System" will provide fast online authorization for citizens from more than 60 non-EU countries and regions that currently do not require a visa to enter the EU, including Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, Canada, South Korea, Japan, Hong Kong and Macau, etc.
Whether for sightseeing, business travel, medical treatment, transit or transfer, an authorization document from the European Tourist Information and Authorization System is mandatory.
When traveling to a Schengen area country or EU country by plane, ship or ground transport, border agents will check whether your ETIAS is valid. If you do not apply for a valid ETIAS before traveling, you will not be able to travel to Schengen countries or EU countries.
The ETIAS fee is 7 Euros (approximately RM36) and is valid for 3 years. There is no fee for groups under 18 or over 70.
Under the authorization of ETIAS, Malaysians can stay in Europe for a maximum of 90 days within a period of 180 days.
According to the ETIAS website, Malaysians must hold ETIAS authorization documents to travel to the following countries or regions, namely Iceland, Belgium, Italy, Estonia, Denmark, Bulgaria, Croatia, Liechtenstein, Hungary, Cyprus, Greece, Germany, Latvia, Norway, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, France, Sweden, Poland, Luxembourg, Lithuania, Romania, Finland, Portugal, Spain, Malta, Austria, Netherlands, Switzerland, Nagoya, San Marino and Vatican City.
