The current Leong San Tong Khoo Kongsi main building in Penang is 120 years old, having been completed in 1906 following a fire. While the clan association itself was established in 1835 or earlier, and the original, more opulent, structure was completed in 1894, the present-day, scaled-down version was rebuilt shortly after the fire destroyed the original, taking roughly four years to complete.

*Khoo Boo Yang: Upholding Social Responsibility — Supporting Education and Cultural Heritage*

(Celebrating the 190th Anniversary of Khoo Kongsi)

(George Town, 28th)
Khoo Boo Yang, Chairman of the Khoo Kongsi Board of Trustees, stated that since its establishment, Khoo Kongsi has consistently upheld its responsibility to give back to society and to nurture future generations of clan members. Through continued efforts in education development, clan relations, and asset growth, the association aims to create long-term value for both the clan and society.

On Saturday (27th), he attended the 190th Anniversary Celebration of Khoo Kongsi, where he noted that the anniversary is calculated from 1835, the year Khoo Kongsi was formally established. If traced back to 1816, when the ancestral temple was first founded, the organization’s history would span 209 years.

This year, 19 clan members from various universities received recognition, including 10 male and 9 female graduates, with 7 recipients receiving special awards for outstanding academic achievement. Graduates were encouraged to contribute to society in their future careers and to carry forward the spirit of giving back, continuing the clan’s legacy.

*Support for Education*

Khoo Boo Yang highlighted Khoo Kongsi’s long-standing support for Xinjiang Primary School. In conjunction with the school’s 118th anniversary, the association successfully raised RM3 million, fully allocated to upgrading school facilities. Improvements include:

New classrooms and campus beautification

Toilets, LED screens, stage lighting, and sound systems

He added that the school is moving toward the goal of becoming a “Malaysia-style Little Apple (Apple-inspired school)”, providing students with free laptops and fully implementing smart education and digital learning. The school has also upgraded drinking water systems, strengthened health facilities, and plans to build a swimming pool and enhance outdoor activities to support holistic education.

He encouraged more clan members to enroll their children at Xinjiang Primary School, noting that alumni may receive preferential consideration when applying for Khoo Kongsi higher-education scholarships.

*Cultural Exchange & Clan Relations*

On clan and international exchange, he said Khoo Kongsi maintains close ties with clans in Xiamen (China), with frequent exchanges. In April this year, over 50 clan members from George Town, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, and other regions participated in the biennial Baosheng Dadi Festival in Xiamen. The Xiamen authorities have also proposed exchange programs for Xinjiang Primary School students.

*Qing Ming Clan Gathering*

He announced that starting next year, during the Qing Ming Festival, Khoo Kongsi will host an annual Khoo Clan Family Reunion Dinner, with the inaugural event scheduled for April 4 next year.

*Asset Development*

Regarding asset development, he said Khoo Kongsi is promoting urban renewal projects, upgrading and revitalizing commercial spaces within the heritage zone, transitioning them toward food & beverage, cultural, and commercial uses.

He added that 16 shop units near the clan entrance are currently under renovation and will be converted into a hotel, expected to open later and generate rental income for the association.
Additionally, the 350-acre Sunshine Group project in Ai Yi Tan is progressing steadily, helping to strengthen Khoo Kongsi’s long-term financial foundation.

*Closing*

He expressed gratitude to all clan members, board members, and business partners for their continued support, and reaffirmed that Khoo Kongsi will continue to play an active role in cultural preservation, education, and social development.
