Orangutans share one of the strongest mother-young bonds in the animal kingdom. Young orangutans stay with their mothers for up to eight years, learning essential survival skills such as finding food, building nests, and navigating the forest canopy. Mothers are highly attentive, rarely leaving their offspring alone during these early years. In Sabah, orangutans can be observed in their natural habitat along the Kinabatangan River, Deramakot Forest Reserve, and Danum Valley. Visitors can also learn more about their conservation and rehabilitation at the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, which plays a vital role in protecting this endangered species.
