Well today was a very full day. We hired a private taxi which only cost 100 AUD. He drove us around all day and took us everywhere we wanted to go. First stop was the orangutang rehabilitation centre. These beautiful creatures are dying because of Palm tree logging that is happening. Palm trees are being cut down for palm oil and the mothers have nothing to eat, so they die and their babies become orphans ....so very sad. The rehab centre is doing a great job with them.
Second stop was the proboscis monkey. These tunny little creatures were just everywhere . We got very close and personal with theses ones and the silver ones came running down the track ... A special experience!
Next , was the sun bear rehabilitation centre. This was the place that made me cry. The video we watched before the walk was so heartbreaking. Some bears are killed for their gall bladder because it is supposed to have healing properties , others are killed to make Paw soup...tragic an unaaceptable!
The last stop, was the Australian war memorial, moving, tragic and incredibly thought provoking. When you look around at Borneo and see the dense jungle around you, you wonder how anyone survived.
Then Adam( our driver) asked if we wanted to go to his house. He lives in a fishing village with his mother, father, 2 sisters and many children., a fascinating insight into how the locals live
