Ramp Agent duties

Ramp agents are responsible for all ground servicing of an aircraft while in the airport between flights.

Typically, this means preparing for aircraft arrival by readying the wheel chocks, beltloaders (for unloading baggage), and various other machinery used in aircraft maintenance. When the aircraft arrives, ramp agents are responsible for guiding the pilots with hand signals or orange flashlight wands into position next to the gate. When the plane comes to a stop, ramp agents chock the wheels of the plane and guide the jetbridge (the enclosed ramp connecting the airport gate to the aircraft) to the aircraft door. Ramp agents also perform a variety of maintenance activities.

Chocks
A block of wood or rubber to stabilize the wheels when parking an aircraft

Cockpit
The forward section of the airplane where the pilots sit during a flight

Whenever the public needs information about flights, making a reservation, or checking in before a flight, they will be dealing with the airline passenger service agent behind the counter.
Airline passenger service agents are also known as customer service agents or check-in assistants.

Job Responsibilities
There are several tasks that passenger service agents do. This includes checking passengers in, giving refunds, providing them with seat numbers, labeling luggage, giving out boarding passes, and leading them to their aircraft boarding site. They also handle various passenger questions dealing with flight schedules, delayed flights, and handle other needs that passengers may have – such as wheelchairs, children, elderly, and others. Additional tasks may also be assigned.

Airline Jobs – A Brief History

From the earliest days of flying, people with pioneering spirits have graced the aviation industry. People such as the Wright brothers, who flew the first aircraft, to others like Amelia Earhart, Beryl Markham, and Charles Lindbergh, brought the aircraft industry with its possibilities to the attention of the world.

In December of 1903 the Wright brothers, Orville and Wilbur, made history with their first heavier-than-aircraft flight. A mere two years after that, they had developed the first fixed-wing aircraft and the controls that made it possible. In order to develop the fledgling aircraft further, they soon developed a wind tunnel and other devices to test their designs without having to actually build a full-size model.
