Saw this plant a lot in the jungle of Kiulu, Sabah.

Scientific name and Local name:-
Anisophyllea disticha (Jack) Baill. Anisophylleaceae. CN: [Malay - Raja berangkat, Payung diraja, Mengasih, Kayu ribu-ribu, Lidah katak, Lelambai, Pokok kancil, Kayu pacat, Lambai ayam, Rambai ayam, Meribut, Ambun-ambun, Kayu runap; regional vernacular names - Lambai ayam, Kayu ribu, Mempiding, Sepiding], Leechwood, Mousedeer plant. Native to Malesia floristic zone (Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore).

Forest understorey shrub/treelet that grows to a height of 7m and characterized by strong shoot dimorphism, an adaptation for light interception in strongly shaded habitats. Common throughout from lowland to montane forest.

🌱HERBS

The Malays eat the leaves to stop diarrhea and dysentery. A decoction made by boiling the roots with other herbs to make a drink used to relieve weariness and post natal treatment.

We’ll trek 6 km through lush trails to Kampung Lingga, where you’ll sit with locals, string Dalai beads, weave nets, make tapai rice wine, and learn traditional games. At night, you’ll dance under the stars, then sleep in a cozy tent listening to the sounds of the jungle.

The next morning? Wake early for a village walk, watch rubber tapping and rice pounding in action, and witness the strength and beauty of a silat martial arts performance.

In the quiet village of Kiulu, a boy once asked his grandfather, “Apa guna sungai kalau hanya mengalir?” (What’s the use of a river if it only flows?)

His grandfather smiled, pointing to the clear water running beneath the bamboo bridge.
“That river feeds our rice fields. It teaches us patience, because it carves rock over time. It connects one kampung to another—just like our stories.”
