During a December dive on Creche reef, we came across this mesmerizing sight: a Common Egg Cowrie (Ovula o**m) slowly gliding over a leather coral, gently feeding along the way.

In the video, you can clearly see where it’s been feeding — the coral tissue turns strikingly white in the grazed areas, while the untouched parts remain rich brown with live polyps still present. It’s a perfect visual of how these little snails delicately remove the surface layer as they eat.

These stunning snails are perfectly suited to life on soft, leathery corals like toadstool types — their glossy white, egg-shaped shell stays mostly hidden beneath a velvety black mantle dotted with tiny white spots, creating nature’s ultimate camouflage cloak!

Using their delicate rasping “tongue” (the radula), they graze in calm, graceful sweeps. The video captures that peaceful rhythm so beautifully — just a quiet wanderer in its underwater world.

Even though leather corals have natural defenses, the Egg Cowrie feels right at home, turning challenges into its daily meal. It’s a gentle reminder of the reef’s intricate balance: every creature plays a part in the web of life down there.

Another epic day at our all-time fave reef – Mike’s Cupboard, just past the lighthouse! This spot never disappoints... and today? We got treated to not one, but a couple of these absolute legends chilling on the sandy bottom: Greyspot Guitarfish! 🐟✨

These guys are like the ultimate mash-up – shark body with a ray vibe. Their DNA screams shark, but that flattened shape and those massive pectoral fins? Total ray energy. They’re basically an evolutionary bridge between sharks and rays, with fossils dating back to the Jurassic period! Mind blown. 🤯

Spotted their signature look: those big blue-grey spots scattered across their back and fins, perfectly camouflaged against the reef floor. They love resting on sandy seabeds in shallow coastal waters (up to ~100m deep), ambushing small fish, crabs, shrimp, and molluscs with a sneaky suction move. Harmless to us divers.

Sadly, they’re listed as Endangered (IUCN), mostly from overfishing and habitat pressure in the Western Indian Ocean – East Africa to Madagascar. Seeing them thriving here reminds us why we protect these special spots.

Can’t believe we’re already in the second month of 2026! Feels like just yesterday we were diving the stunning reefs at Barra.
This video is from a dive at Reggies, one of the outer reefs at Barra – famous for its epic topography! Toward the end, we glide over a flat section covered in beautiful Acropora table corals.
Here we spot the adorable Twobar Humbug (Dascyllus carneus) – those little guys with the two black bars, often hovering in small shoals over branching or table corals. You’ll usually see them hanging out with the iconic Palette Surgeonfish (aka Dory from Finding Nemo).
To capture photos or video of these shy fish, go full stealth mode! As you approach, they dart into the coral to hide. On your next dive see how close you can get before they vanish.
Fun fact: The shoal has a clear pecking order – one dominant male rules, with many females. If he’s gone, the most dominant female changes s*x to become the next male leader! Nature is wild.
