Last week we participated in the long awaited Guinjata Bonanza. While fishing with clients and fishing well and hard the first 2 days, we found ourselves in first place in the species division. Due to ambiguity of fishing boundaries, multiple boats misinterpreted the boundry line, and were witnessed fishing beyond the boundaries on Monday and Tuesday. After seeking clarification of the boundaries on Tuesday evening, a further misunderstanding took place where the name of a reef was given as a boundary, but unfortunately that reef (located outside the boundary), was mistaken for a reef inside the boundary. Unfortunately on day 3, after a good start to the morning we traveled south to what we had understood to be the reef named as the boundary, to look for different species. In front of multiple boats we unknowingly crossed the designated competition boundary. Minutes after crossing the boundary I was informed by a committee member, along with 2 other boats, that we had all unknowingly crossed the boundary. We hadn’t even begun fishing before we turned around and returned back across the boundary. After discussions with the committee, I, as the skipper, took full responsibility for the mistake. After consulting my team we decided it was best to withdraw from the competition as, however unintentional, we did break a rule of the competition.
We hope to return next year and finish what we started this year and take home the victory. 👏🏼
