Why Tyre Pressure Is the Most Important Thing To Manage When You Do Off-Road Driving
I find it amazing, and also amusing the number of people who get stuck, usually to the chassis of the vehoicle, especially in sand and muddy terrains, due to one single factor – tyre pressure.
Here's the simple truth: your tyres are the only part of your 4x4 that touches the ground. The engine, the diff locks, the fancy electronics and traction controls can only work through those four patches of rubber. Change the air pressure inside them and you change what your whole vehicle can do. No other adjustment you can make in two minutes with a R150 gauge has that much positive effect on your vehicle performance.
1. Lower pressure makes your tyre's footprint bigger
Push your thumb hard into a fully blown-up balloon. Only a tiny spot flattens against your thumb. Let some air out and push again. A much bigger patch of balloon wraps around your thumb.
Your tyre works the same way. On tar at 2.2 bar, each tyre touches the ground with a patch about the size of your open hand, roughly 20 cm long. Drop to 1.0 bar and that patch stretches to 35 or 40 cm. Do that on all four tyres and you've nearly doubled the rubber gripping the ground without spending a cent. Lowering you tyre pressure does not increase the breadth of your tyre track as I once thought, but rather elongates the tyre track
Everything else in this article flows from that one fact.
2. A bigger footprint gives you more traction
Grip is simple maths. More rubber on the ground means more grip, as long as the surface holds together.
Lower pressure also lets the tread work properly. Each tread block can bend and bite into the surface instead of sitting rigid on the surface. On a loose, stony climb in the Cederberg, a tyre at 1.2 bar finds grip on edges and ridges that the same tyre at 2.2 bar spins straight over.
There's a second effect people miss: a soft tyre keeps touching the ground over bumps. A hard tyre bounces, and a tyre in the air has zero grip and zero steering. Watch a hard-tyred bakkie on corrugations and you can see the wheels skipping. That's why they tend to slide wide on gravel corners. At 1.6 bar the tyre stays planted and the vehicle tracks straight. There are countless videos of vehicles going up a hill, bouncing and losing traction and direction and then slide back and overturn.
One honest exception: thick mud. Sometimes you want a narrower, harder tyre that cuts through the slop to the firm base underneath. Sand and mud are opposite problems. Float on sand, dig through mud.
3. A bigger footprint stops you sinking
Try walking across soft beach sand in netball shoes. You sink with every step. Try it with flippers on and you stay on top, because your weight spreads over a bigger area.
That's the whole trick with sand driving. A 2,500 kg Hilux at 2.2 bar pushes hard on four small patches and digs in. The same Hilux at 0.8 bar spreads its weight and floats across the top. The standard advice for the Atlantis dunes or a Mozambique beach is to drop to about 1.0 bar before you drive onto the sand, and lower still, around 0.8, if you get stuck. You can feel when your tyres start cutting into the sand, (you must go to a lower gear or increase the throttle, burning much more fuel) and you can feel when you start to float of the sand (your speed increases, and less throttle). The drivers who skip this step are the ones being dug out an hour later.
In Mozambique, on sand, I usually start at 1,1 bar in front and 1,3 bar at the back, depending on the load I carry, and then reduce pressure if required.
4. A soft tyre wraps around rocks instead of bouncing off them
On rocky tracks, a hard tyre skips and slides because only a small bit of rubber touches each stone. A softer tyre at 1.2 to 1.4 bar moulds itself over the rock and grips it. You climb obstacles at idle speed that would have you spinning wheels at road pressure. A sharp rock also punches easier through a hard tyre and increases your chances of punctures.
5. Soft tyres protect the tyre itself
This sounds backwards, but it's true. Lower pressure prevents the three most common off-road tyre failures:
Sidewall stabs. A tyre at high pressure is stretched drum-tight, so a sharp rock or broken branch punches straight through. At lower pressure the rubber gives way and folds around the point instead of being pierced. Guides who run Van Zyl's Pass in Namibia insist on 1.2 to 1.4 bar for exactly this reason.
Impact cuts. Hit a sharp-edged rock or hidden hole at speed with a hard tyre and the sidewall gets hammered against the rim, which cuts the tyre from the inside. This is the classic gravel-road blowout on roads like the C14 to Sossusvlei. Dropping to 1.6 bar and slowing to 80 km/h prevents most of them. Heat failures. An overloaded tyre at the wrong pressure, driven fast on hot gravel, builds heat until the carcass delaminates. Correct pressure for the load, plus sensible speed, prevents it.
6. It makes the ride massively more comfortable
At 1.6 bar on corrugations, your tyres become part of the suspension as softer tyres absorb the bumps. The vehicle stops shaking itself apart, the rattles are less, things stay in the cupholders, and you save your suspension, your fillings, and your loose luggage. You also arrive less tired, and tired drivers make mistakes.
7. It protects the tracks you drive
This is the part most drivers ignore, and it has real consequences.
A hard tyre spinning for grip acts like a digging tool. It rips out topsoil, tears up plants, and cuts ruts. On a steep track those ruts become water channels in the next rains, and the water carves them into ditches. That's how a rough but passable track becomes a washed-out mess in two seasons. Plenty of Western Cape mountain passes have sections that got worse exactly this way. On the sand you create cross articulation bumps and dips which increases the sideway rolling of the vehicle and makes the drive with all the shaking very uncomfortable.
Soft tyres change the equation:
Less wheelspin and digging. With double the grip, your wheels roll instead of churning. A vehicle at 1.0 bar climbing a dune leaves smooth tracks. The same vehicle at 2.2 bar leaves gouged trenches.
Less ground pressure. The bigger footprint spreads your 2.5 tonnes over more area, so you crush less. This matters enormously on fragile surfaces like dune vegetation and the slow-growing soil crusts in places like the Richtersveld, where one set of deep tracks stays visible for decades.
Fewer stuck vehicles. Every recovery tears up ground. Digging, wheelspin, and winching damage a track far more than driving through does. Airing down means you don't get stuck in the first place.
There's a selfish angle too. Trails that get chewed up get closed. Landowners and reserves shut 4x4 routes when they degrade, and churned tracks are the main evidence they point to. Sandy routes along the West Coast have already been lost this way. Correct tyre pressure is the cheapest trail-preservation tool there is.
The catch: you can't leave them soft.
Air pressure is a trade, and you must trade to suit your situation the best. Three rules:
Slow down when deflated. At 1.0 bar, stay under 40 km/h in sand and under 80 on gravel. A soft tyre driven fast overheats and can pop off the rim in a corner.
No sharp turns at very low pressure. Below 1.0 bar, a hard turn can pull the tyre right off the rim.
Pump up before the tar. Highway speed on 1.2 bar wrecks a tyre in kilometres and makes the vehicle dangerous to steer. Carry a decent 12V compressor; a good one refills four bakkie tyres in about 10 minutes.

These pressures vary with load, so a bakkie full of kit and camping gear needs a bit more. Start at higher a pressure as it is always easy the let it down if required.
The bottom line
I've watched a standard Fortuner at 0.9 bar cruise up a dune that a lifted, big-tyred bakkie at 2.2 bar couldn't climb after five attempts. The expensive modifications lost to a two-minute stop and a tyre gauge.
Air down and you grip more, sink less, break fewer tyres, ride better, and leave the track the way you found it. Five wins from one small adjustment, which is why experienced drivers deflate before the tar ends, every single time. Air down first, then blame the vehicle.
