Samora Machel Statue – Where Mozambique’s Story Stands Tall

In the heart of Maputo, Independence Square proudly hosts the monumental statue of Samora Machel — Mozambique’s first President and a key figure in the liberation struggle. ✊✨

This is where the nation celebrates its resilience: the square itself dates back to colonial times, once named Praça Mouzinho de Albuquerque. After independence in 1975, it was transformed into a memorial space honoring freedom and sovereign identity.

The bronze statue — towering at 9 meters — symbolizes leadership, courage, and the vision that guided Mozambique into a new era. It was inaugurated on October 19, 2011, marking the 25th anniversary of Samora Machel’s passing.

What is Mussiro ? The Beauty and Secret of a Mozambican Female Tradition.

For Mozambican women, Mussiro is more than a cosmetic; it’s a deep cultural symbol, used specially in the northern provinces.

What is it ?
It’s a paste made from the bark of a tree, usually the Mussiro or Nsumbila, which is grated and mixed with water.
It is used as protection against the sun as it acts as a natural sunscreen.
It’s used as a beauty treatment as it is known for its cleansing and skin-softening properties.
And it is mostly a cultural symbol as it is used in beauty rituals to indicate a transition to a new phase of life.

Its artistic pattern and white color are immediately recognizable and represents purity and female identity. The cultural richness of Mozambique lies in these ancestral traditions, which continue to color the daily life and tell the story of a people.

Pilgrim’s Rest is a small town along the Panorama Route, known for its historical significance and picturesque setting. It was established in the 1800’s after gold was discovered in the area which attracted prospectors. In the 1980’s was declared a national monument to preserve its history.
Surrounded by mountains and lush greenery and an historical heritage site, it is definitely a must visit 😀
