I am really pleased to be hosting this unique premium meditation and wellness retreat at the luxurious Matetsi Victoria Falls | Luxury safari lodge, Zimbabwe, in one of Africa’s most extraordinary natural settings. Here, beside the Zambezi River and close to the majestic presence of Victoria Falls, one of the world’s great natural wonders, nature becomes part of our practice.

Matetsi Victoria Falls offers a rare expression of luxury in one of Africa’s most breathtaking locations. Set on a private wilderness beside the Zambezi River, it lies just a short distance from the thundering wonder of Victoria Falls, which will actually be one of our practice locations. The retreat will be rooted in stillness, awareness and nature.

We will practice with the sound of birdsong at first light, the movement of animals across the plain, the changing colours of the Zambezi at sunrise and sunset and, of course, with the majesty and power of Victoria Falls themselves. This is an invitation to pause and experience our interconnection with the natural world and with ourselves in one of the world’s most stunning locations.

A five-night retreat for those longing for more calm, clarity and (inter)connection. January 31 - Feb 5, 2027. Watch this space for more details or DM with any questions.

Sitting around a camp fire in the bush can change the way a conversation flows. The fire helps. The darkness helps. The nearby calls of the wild also help. Some conversations need a different setting. That’s why I hold retreats here in Mozambique. I still feel the call to bring groups of men to this setting, a setting that might just prompt conversations that have never come up before - about the challenges of handling change, getting older, being a father, being a leader, handling emotions etc. A different environment can help. Coral reefs, mangroves, pristine beaches, untouched islands, fishing villages unchanged for centuries, and the African bush can rewire and transform patterns, beliefs and anxieties that have conditioned you for years. Stay tuned, or DM me if you are a man interested in taking this transformational journey with me. This is your retreat space.

The Baobab: The Mysterious Giant and the Tree of Life.

There are 9 species of Baobabs, 2 of them found on the mainland in Africa. They store thousands of liters of water in their trunks and provide very nutritious food. The fruit is very rich in Vitamin C, did you know it has six times more Vitamin C than an orange? It contains more antioxidants than any other fruit on earth. Hence, the Tree of Life.

I love Baobabs. For me, they are the old Masters of the land, the wise, quiet witnesses of hundreds of years in time. It always feels very special to visit them, and see them in the landscape.

While threatened, fortunately Mozambique has still many of them and it's wonderful we can buy the seeds for just a few cents on the local market, to make the super healthy juice from it (called Malambe), which is considered as a powerfood.

Would you also like to visit the old Baobabs?
Welcome to Unique Mozambique.

I never imagined in my life that I would be a mindfulness meditation teacher. If you had told me 20 years ago what I would be doing and where I would be living today I would have looked at you as if you were totally crazy. But life has a strange way of moving you in certain directions. The death of my parents in 2014 made me ask myself important questions about myself and my life. Through that, I discovered yoga and its amazing effect on body and mind. This led me to discovering mindfulness, studying it and taking the path that I am on now. I hear this a lot as a mindfulness and meditation teacher. It’s the big life events, such as loss or change, that move people to question themselves and their priorities.

This path led to the creation of MindWise. A chance visit to Vilanculos, Mozambique during the pandemic, a meeting with Bahia Mar whose manager and yoga teacher, Susana Vidal , showed interest in developing retreats together - and MindWise was born.

I think that the biggest thing I can do as a teacher is to let you experience the life-changing effect that meditation has had on me. To show you how it works and how it can change your life. Most of all to teach that all of our answers lie within ourselves and that taking the inward journey can also be life-affirming for you. Send me a direct message if you are interested in learning more.

I just had the pleasure of being the celebrant to help Eric and Carolyn from Michigan renew their wedding vows after. 20 years of marriage. The hotel they were staying at here in Vilanculos had asked me did I know anyone who could do this. And I said I would be happy to put together some mindful wedding vows for them. Which they loved. The vows were based on some of the most important attitudes of mindfulness practice such as beginner’s mind, letting go, acceptance, patience and trust. And we finished with them both wishing each other well in a beautiful loving kindness meditation together. It was beautiful to do in the presence of their children and one set of parents. Thank you to the Homberger family. I wish you at least another 20 years together!

The rare and elusive dugong can sometimes be spotted in the waters of the Bazaruto Archipelago, opposite my house in Mozambique. Also known as sea cows, they are hard to find but now and then they glide silently under the boat as we take an island trip. It is thought that they gave rise to the myth of the mermaid, with their long tails - hard to see, but there you are. Maybe those sailors had a bit too much rum on board.

Believe it or not, they are also directly related to the elephant. They are mammals that surface to breathe air and feed on the abundant sea grass that is here in the maritime national park.

The dugong has other symbolic and spiritual meanings in many cultures. One I like is that its gentle and graceful nature, their slow, fluid movements and their peaceful coexistence within their environment represents tranquility, peace, patience and harmony in one’s life.

My Ocean Mind, Ocean Life retreat at the Bazaruto Centre for Scientific Studies in November will also help you to be like a dugong! During this unique retreat, you will explore the pristine underwater world in this area with the centre’s dive team and researchers. And you will also sit with me and learn how to find the silence and stillness behind our usual chaotic mind.

As a sea mammal, the dugong bridges the gap between the human and marine worlds. Our practice during this retreat will help you see the bridge between the busy mind - the waves pounding onto the shore - and the stillness of the ocean mind below, which is always accessible to us. See link in bio

And you might even spot a dugong.
