Turtles are widely viewed as symbols of wisdom, patience, and ancient knowledge across many world cultures. Their association with being slow, steady and having a long life has led these creatures to be seen as “wise elders” who draw on their lifelong knowledge to pass on their wisdom.

In Eastern philosophies, including certain practices of Hinduism, the turtle’s ability to withdraw its limbs into its protective shell is a symbol of profound spiritual wisdom, representing the discipline of detaching from worldly, external distractions and looking inward.

For some indigenous cultures, such as the American Iroquois, the earth rests on the back of a giant turtle, making it a figure of ancient creation, stability, and grounding as it carries the wisdom of the world on its back. In Chinese mythology, the turtle is one of the four sacred spiritually endowed beasts (alongside the dragon, phoenix, and tiger) representing the element of water, endurance, and primordial knowledge.

You too can learn these mindful attributes of the turtle, and perhaps dive along with these beautiful creatures. “Ocean Mind, Ocean Life” partners with the Bazaruto Centre for Scientific Studies in July and November of this year. Set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Bazaruto Archipelago in Mozambique, this immersive experience blends ocean exploration, hands-on research, and meditation practices designed to foster presence and stillness.

Come to this unspoiled and beautiful part of the world which inspires a sense of peace, stillness and calmness and experience the mindful, unhurried approach to life here - just like the turtle. Here is your retreat Space - see link in bio

Africa has always been my passion, and it was always my dream to one day live here again.

In 2021, after spending 11 years in Portugal, we decided to change course once more and shipped our entire life to Vilanculos, Mozambique. From here, we set out to create mindful retreats and transformative holidays. Later, Uniek Mozambique was also born, offering unique and personal travel experiences throughout Mozambique.

Adventurous, idealistic, or unrealistic? Who's to say?

The truth is, it's not an easy road. Mozambique remains a hidden gem—even for travellers seeking destinations far beyond the usual tourist routes, let alone those searching for a mindfulness retreat. It's a country of extraordinary beauty, but not an easy place to build a business. Employment opportunities are limited, and just when things seem to be falling into place, another challenge appears: a cyclone, flooding, months of political unrest that bring tourism to a standstill, global conflicts affecting fuel supplies, or the endless stream of misinformation that makes Mozambique to a place to be 'cautious' where in reality it's one of the safest places we've ever lived. There is always something.

If there is one thing Africa teaches you, it is that hard work alone—or the idea that you can achieve any dream through goals, plans, and relentless action—is not always a guarantee of success. The idea of a fully controllable world does not exist here.

Systems are often fragile or absent, so often nature changes your plans, and more often people do, especially governments. The best thing you can do is learn to move with the current: like the colourful fish drifting through the coral reefs, like the trees bending with the wind, and like Africans themselves, who time and again pick up the thread, smile, and begin a new day with resilience and optimism.

Together, never alone. A collective network of individuals, each unique and indispensable.

Concepts such as impermanence (everything comes and goes), interconnectedness and interdependence (Ubuntu), sustainability (taking only what you need), and humanity perhaps reveal themselves nowhere more clearly than here in Africa.

And that is exactly what we offer through our retreats.

It’s a unique combination of theory and practice: evidence-based mindfulness guidance from Gerry, combined with the lessons of everyday life in Africa. A meaningful retreat experience blended with relaxation, adventure, and authentic cultural immersion.

Our retreats are real, because Mozambique is real.

Pure, calm, serene, and breathtakingly beautiful, this is a place where you can slow down, let go, and reconnect—with yourself, with nature, and with life itself. Experience local life alongside us. Discover extraordinary people, untouched landscapes, hidden places, and profound silence.

Mozambique is the retreat.

Mozambique is the workation.

Mozambique is mindfulness in practice.

Mozambique is unique.

Mozambique and its unspoiled shoreline. Clouds in the sky, waves in the ocean. Two metaphors that are often used in meditation to portray thoughts and mind. The clouds are just like thoughts that move through the blue sky of the mind and then disappear. The waves that pound onto the shore are thoughts that appear from and disappear back into the deeper ocean of the mind. Here, in the sky and the ocean, lies the peace and stillness that is always yours to find. Thoughts are just thoughts that arise from and pass away back to this stillness. Come and join me to discover this place of silence within. Here is your retreat space.

Where Ocean Meets the Mind - a unique diving, meditation and diving research retreat in one of the most beautiful places in the world. Join me and the team from the Bazaruto Centre for Scientific Studies for an extraordinary five-day retreat where we come together to offer a transformative journey rooted in both science and mindfulness meditation. Set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Bazaruto Archipelago, this immersive experience blends ocean exploration, hands-on research, and meditation practices designed to foster presence and stillness.

In meditation, the mind is often likened to the ocean—vast, powerful, and deeply still—while our thoughts move like waves across its surface. This retreat invites you to experience both: the boundless expanse within and the untamed beauty of the legendary Bazaruto Archipelago.

Set within Africa’s first permanent ocean observatory, it offers a rare chance to explore pristine waters, engage with cutting-edge ocean science, and reconnect with yourself in one of the most extraordinary marine environments on Earth.

Two retreats are on offer : one in July and one in November. See link in bio for full details
