Turtles are widely viewed as symbols of wisdom, patience, and ancient knowledge across many world cultures. Their association with being slow, steady and having a long life has led these creatures to be seen as “wise elders” who draw on their lifelong knowledge to pass on their wisdom.
In Eastern philosophies, including certain practices of Hinduism, the turtle’s ability to withdraw its limbs into its protective shell is a symbol of profound spiritual wisdom, representing the discipline of detaching from worldly, external distractions and looking inward.
For some indigenous cultures, such as the American Iroquois, the earth rests on the back of a giant turtle, making it a figure of ancient creation, stability, and grounding as it carries the wisdom of the world on its back. In Chinese mythology, the turtle is one of the four sacred spiritually endowed beasts (alongside the dragon, phoenix, and tiger) representing the element of water, endurance, and primordial knowledge.
You too can learn these mindful attributes of the turtle, and perhaps dive along with these beautiful creatures. “Ocean Mind, Ocean Life” partners with the Bazaruto Centre for Scientific Studies in July and November of this year. Set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Bazaruto Archipelago in Mozambique, this immersive experience blends ocean exploration, hands-on research, and meditation practices designed to foster presence and stillness.
Come to this unspoiled and beautiful part of the world which inspires a sense of peace, stillness and calmness and experience the mindful, unhurried approach to life here - just like the turtle. Here is your retreat Space - see link in bio
