✨ The Red Ochre Women of Namibia ✨

👑 The Women & Otjize
Himba women are famous for their radiant, terracotta-glowing skin and hair. This comes from otjize—a sacred mix of butterfat and crushed red ochre stone.
More than cosmetic, this vibrant red paste acts as a natural sunblock and insect repellent in the blistering desert. Because water is scarce, women never bathe with water. Instead, they use daily, aromatic smoke baths to cleanse and perfume themselves.
☀️ The Children
In a Himba village, every woman mothers every child. You can tell a child's age just by looking at their hair!
Young Girls: Wear two thick braids styled forward over their faces.
Young Boys: Wear a single braid trailing down the back.
From a young age, children learn by doing—little girls practice grinding ochre stone, while young boys herd small goats near the homestead.
🪵 The Men
While women anchor the traditional look of the village, Himba men hold vital roles rooted in survival.
The Sacred Fire: The village chief ensures the Okuruwo (holy fire) never goes out, keeping a constant spiritual bridge to their ancestors.
The Herders: Men manage the cattle and goats, traveling long distances to find fresh grazing land.
The Himba remind us that true wealth lies in a fierce dedication to community, identity, and tradition. 🌍✨
