Winter is coming… but May is a stunning time for photographic safaris in Namibia.
We took a quiet morning walk at Springbokhaardam, part of our Leaflove Safari Protectorate on farm Nomtsas, where we’ve created a few shallow dams to give birds more space and habitat.
And it paid off: we spotted around 9 African Painted-snipes (Rostratula benghalensis) – shy, ground-loving waders that blend beautifully into the reeds and mudflats.
All it took was time, patience, and silence, and we got the shots we were hoping for.
Especially striking were the males, whose metallic golden shoulder patches shimmered in the morning light — a clear reason why these beauties are nicknamed “Goldschnepfen” in German.
