Desert scenes don’t get much better than this. 🌵☀️

A crystal-blue pool in the middle of the Namib Desert, with a herd of majestic oryx gathering at the waterhole just beyond the deck. Silence, endless red sands, distant mountains, and wildlife moving freely across one of the oldest deserts on earth.

BROWN HYENA SPOTTED.
We went for a hike up Rossing Mountain and on the way down we spotted a brown Hyena.

The brown hyena, also called the strandwolf, is a species of hyena found in Namibia, Botswana, western and southern Zimbabwe, southern Mozambique, western Eswatini, and South Africa. It is the only extant species in the genus Parahyaena. It is currently the rarest species of hyena.

The recent rainfall in the Namib Desert is truly remarkable—receiving the most rain it has seen in 50 years is a significant climatic event for one of the world's oldest and driest deserts. See the transformation before and after the recent rains.

Ecological Transformation – Desert-adapted plants like the !nara melon and ephemeral grasses will sprout, providing food for insects, reptiles, and small mammals.

Wildlife Revival – Rare desert species, such as the Namib Desert beetle, fog-basking lizards, and even oryx, benefit from sudden water availability.

Ephemeral Rivers & Pans– Dry riverbeds (like the Kuiseb and Tsauchab) may briefly flow, filling clay pans and creating temporary oases.

Long-Term Impact– While the desert will eventually return to arid conditions, the rain can trigger long-lasting seed banks, sustaining life for years.
