Sandwich Harbour (Portuguese: Porto d'Ilhéu), also known as Sandwich Bay, Sandvishawe, Sandvisbaai and Sandfisch Bai is an area on the Atlantic coast of Namibia that includes a bay in the north and a lagoon at the southern end.[2] Sandwich Harbour might have been named after an English whaling ship, the Sandwich, which worked during the 1780s, or the name may be a corruption of the German word "sandfische", a species of shark found in the area.[3] Formerly, the bay was a moderately-sized commercial port based around whaling and small-scale fishing, but it is now best known for its birdlife in the lagoon to the south of the bay. According to the broadest definition, the Namib stretches for more than 2,000 kilometres (1,200 mi) along the Atlantic coasts of Angola, Namibia, and northwest South Africa, extending southward from the Carunjamba River in Angola, through Namibia and to the Olifants River in Western Cape, South Africa.[2][3][4] The Namib's northernmost portion, which extends 450 kilometres (280 mi) from the Angola-Namibia border, is known as Moçâmedes Desert, while its southern portion approaches the neighboring Kalahari Desert. From the Atlantic coast eastward, the Namib gradually ascends in elevation, reaching up to 200 kilometres (120 mi) inland to the foot of the Great Escarpment.[2] Annual precipitation ranges from 2 millimetres (0.079 in) in the aridest regions to 200 millimetres (7.9 in) at the escarpment, making the Namib the only true desert in southern Africa.[2][4][5] Having endured arid or semi-arid conditions for roughly 55–80 million years, the Namib may be the oldest desert in the world[2][5] and contains some of the world's driest regions, with only western South America's Atacama Desert to challenge it for age and aridity benchmarks.

The Namib Dune Gecko, also called the palmetto gecko or web-footed gecko, is an exclusive species that can only be found in the Namib Desert. It can grow up to 13cm in length and boasts translucent skin, which appears almost surreal when at rest, but strikingly vivid when in motion.

They spend the day in burrows they have dug themselves and come out at night to feed. Imagine spending the entire day in a burrow that you dug yourself, only to emerge at night to find sustenance.

That's the life of some creatures, and while it may seem odd to us, it's a necessary part of their survival. By spending the day underground, they are protected from predators and the harsh sun, ensuring that they can come out at night and thrive. Situated approximately 60km south of Walvis Bay, Sandwich Harbour is an area on the Atlantic Coast of Namibia, that includes a bay in the north and a lagoon in the southern part.

It is most famous for its birdlife in the lagoon, a phenomenon for every photophile.

Sandwich Harbour is situated in the Namib Naukluft Park and everyone entering needs a permit that can be obtained at the Ministry of Environment and Tourism. Park permits are included in the tour price when you book a tour with us.

The bay is only accessible by 4x4 vehicles driven over dramatically sculpted dunes shaped by the relentless winds of the Namib Desert. Definitely dynamic artwork. Great knowledge and skill in dune driving is required.
