There’s more to Namibia than only seeing the Big 5… like all of its incredible flora, for instance. The Welwitschia (Welwitschia mirabilis) is one of the most extraordinary and ancient plants on Earth, found only in the Namib Desert of Namibia and southern Angola.
🌱 General Description
• Welwitschia is often called a “living fossil” because it dates back about 200 million years, to the Jurassic period.
• It is the only species in its entire plant family (Welwitschiaceae).
• Despite its odd appearance, it is a gymnosperm, related to conifers like pines and cycads.
🍃 Leaves
• The plant has only two leaves that grow continuously throughout its life.
• These strap-like leaves can reach 2–4 meters long and become shredded and frayed by the desert winds, giving the appearance of many leaves.
• The leaves grow from a thick, woody, short stem that resembles a stump or a cone.
🌸 Reproduction
• Welwitschia is dioecious, meaning there are separate male and female plants.
• Male plants produce small, cone-like structures with pollen.
• Female plants produce larger cones with seeds.
• Insects, especially beetles, pollinate the flowers.
🌍 Habitat & Survival
• It grows in one of the driest places on Earth—the Namib Desert—where annual rainfall may be less than 25 mm.
• It survives by absorbing fog and dew through its leaves and by storing water in its deep taproot.
• Individual plants can live 1,000 to 2,000 years or more.
🌟 Unique Features
• Its bizarre look—two massive, tattered leaves spreading from a woody crown—makes it instantly recognizable.
• It has become a symbol of Namibia’s desert landscapes and resilience.
