🦅 At first glance, the Marabou Stork looks like a bird having a really bad day.

Messy feathers. Bald head. Giant hanging throat pouch. Permanent grumpy expression. And that’s exactly why it earned a place in Africa’s famous Ugly Five. 😄

But spend a little time watching one, and suddenly it becomes fascinating. Marabous are expert scavengers, helping clean the bush by feeding on carcasses and waste that other animals leave behind. In a way… they’re one of Africa’s most important sanitation workers.

Some visitors come to the Zambezi looking for elephants and hippos... then leave completely obsessed with a bird they never expected to see.

Meet the Schalow's Turaco, one of the most striking birds quietly hiding in the riverine forests of the Zambezi Region. And here’s the wild part… those bright red feathers? They’re not just “red-looking” feathers. Turacos are among the very few birds in the world that produce a true red pigment called turacin, which actually contains copper 😳

And despite their flashy appearance, they’re surprisingly shy. You’ll often hear their dramatic barking calls echoing through the trees long before you actually spot one 👀🌳

Even though they can fly, Schalow’s turacos are surprisingly acrobatic climbers. They prefer hopping and gliding through treetops like little forest gymnasts instead of making long dramatic flights.
