Landscape & Viewpoints: The area features vast vistas of grey, vegetation-free hills cut by dry riverbeds. It is a popular spot for scenic drives and photography, especially during early morning or late afternoon when low light creates deep shadows and accentuates the contours. Welwitschia Drive: Moon Valley forms part of the scenic Welwitschia Drive circuit. Visitors can view the ancient Welwitschia mirabilis plants—some estimated to be over 1,000 years old—which survive off coastal fog in the surrounding desert plains.

The Moon Valley (often referred to as the Moon Landscape or Maanlandschap) is a barren, heavily eroded valley located about 30 to 45 km east of Swakopmund, within the Namib-Naukluft National Park. Carved over millions of years by the Swakop River cutting through ancient rock, its desolate expanse of grey, rounded hills gives it a distinctly extraterrestrial, lunar appearance.

The Rock Arch: A iconic natural granite arch framing views of the distant peaks, widely regarded as one of the best sunrise and sunset photo spots in Southern Africa. Rock Art Sites: Thousands of ancient San (Bushman) rock paintings—some up to 4,000 years old—are scattered around the boulders, including sites at Bushman’s Paradise and Rhino Rock. Climbing & Hiking: A destination for rock climbers and hikers, offering boulder scrambles, walking trails, and technical rock climbing routes up the main peak. Stargazing: With almost zero light pollution, the area offers clear views of the night sky and the Milky Way.

The dune belt stretching between Swakopmund and Walvis Bay along Namibia’s central coast is part of the ancient Namib Desert, where massive sand dunes meet the cold waves of the Atlantic Ocean. For photographers and filmmakers, Southern Namibia is world-class due to its exceptional scale, play of light, extreme textures, and low light pollution. Best Time for Shooting: High contrast occurs at midday, but the golden window is sunrise and sunset when shadows slice across the dune ridges.
Lens Selection:
Landscape/Astro: Ultra-wide angle (14mm–24mm, f/2.8 or faster for night skies).
Dune Abstractions & Wildlife: Long telephoto (70–200mm or 100–400mm) to compress dune curves and capture distant oryx/springbok profiles against dune walls.
Filters: Circular Polarizers help cut glare on bright sand, and ND filters allow for long exposures in intense desert sunlight.
