Today, as we celebrate excellence, we remember a footballer who played with joy, speed, and courage — a man whose celebration alone could make an entire stadium smile. His name is Julius Efosa Aghahowa.
Born in Benin City, Aghahowa began like many Nigerian children — playing football on the streets, in school fields, and open spaces. He did not begin as a global star. He began with passion, determination, and a dream.
What made him different was his energy. He never stopped running. Defenders feared his pace, and fans admired his fighting spirit. His journey reminds us that talent must always be joined with hard work.
In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Nigeria was searching for new heroes after the famous 1994 generation. Aghahowa stepped forward. Wearing the green and white of Nigeria, he scored important goals and became one of the exciting faces of the Super Eagles.
At the 2002 FIFA World Cup, he scored Nigeria’s only goal in the tournament. And then came the moment the world would remember.
