Bowing out with head high!

After 43 years in the skies and more than 23,000 total flight hours, the trailblazing Captain Theresa Claiborne has retired with her head high.

Captain Claiborne operated her 'last flight' yesterday, 23 May 2024 from Lisbon, Portugal to Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey, USA. Until her retirement, Theresa was a Boeing 787 Captain at United Airlines where she spent 34 year. She also flew the Boeing 727, 737, 747, 757 and 767.

In 1982, Captain Claiborne became the first Black woman to fly in the U.S. Air Force. She went ahead to become the first Black woman to serve as a command pilot and instructor for the KC-135, a mid-air refueling jet.

In 1990, Captain Claiborne broke barriers again by joining United Airlines after challenging the airline’s minimum height requirement of 5-foot-4, demonstrating that her 5-foot-2 stature did not impede her ability to fly as a commercial pilot. Her pioneering efforts opened doors for countless aspiring aviators.

We wish Captain Theresa Claiborne a very happy retirement.
