Glaucoma is an eye disease that can damage your optic nerve. It's often linked to a buildup of pressure inside your eye. The increased pressure, called intraocular pressure, can damage the optic nerve, which transmits images to your brain. People with glaucoma can lose nerve tissue, resulting in vision loss. However, with early detection and treatment, you can often protect your eyes against serious vision loss.

Glaucoma doesn't usually cause any symptoms to begin with. It tends to develop slowly over many years and affects the edges of your vision. For this reason, many people don't realise they have glaucoma. Glaucoma can usually be detected during a routine eye test at an opticians, often before it causes any noticeable symptoms.

Glaucoma is caused as a result of an intrinsic deterioration of the optic nerve, which leads to high fluid pressure on the front part of the eye. Not everyone with high eye pressure will develop glaucoma, and some people with normal eye pressure will develop glaucoma. When the pressure inside a person's eye is too high for a particular optic nerve, whatever that pressure measurement may be, glaucoma will develop.

There is no cure for glaucoma. Patients with glaucoma need to continue treatment for the rest of their lives. Because the disease can progress or change without warning, compliance with eye medications and undergoing eye examinations are essential; treatment may need to be adjusted periodically. Early detection, prompt treatment and regular monitoring can help to control glaucoma and reduce the chances for vision loss.
