The Netherlands is preparing to receive the first bodies recovered from the crash site of Malaysian Airlines flight MH17.

The flight came down in a rebel-held area of Ukraine last week with the loss of 298 lives.

As many as 193 of those killed with Dutch, with The Netherlands today holding a national day of mourning.

Identification of the bodies is expected to begin following their arrival at the Korporaal van Oudheusden barracks, in a process the Dutch authorities say could take months.

A refrigerated train carriage carrying about 200 bodies from the crash site arrived in the government-held city of Kharkiv yesterday.

The search at the crash site for more bodies will continue.

Forty coffins were laid out at the airport on Wednesday morning, and will be taken to the Netherlands on two separate flights.

In a separate process, the ‘black box’ flight-data recorders from MH17 have been handed to Dutch authorities by Malaysian officials.

The devices will be sent to Farnborough in the UK for analysis.

ETHIOPIAN AIRLINES IMPROVES NIGERIA CONNECTIONS WITH KANO FLIGHTS

Ethiopian Airlines will launch four weekly flights to Kano, Nigeria, from May 24th, 2014.

Located in the north of the country, Kano is the second largest city in Nigeria.

Kano will be the fourth city in Nigeria served by Ethiopian Airlines, joining Ethiopian’s current service to Abuja, the capital of Nigeria; Lagos, Nigeria’s largest city; and Enugu.

With the start of service to Kano, Ethiopian’s 20 weekly flights to and from four cities in Nigeria will offer passengers convenient and seamless connecting options to many destinations throughout the Middle East, Europe, Asia, and the Americas.

The new route through Kano will allow passengers minimum layover in Addis Ababa, with the best possible connections to many global destinations in Ethiopian’s network such as Dubai, Riyadh, Jeddah, Beirut, Cairo, Mumbai, Khartoum, Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Washington, DC, and Toronto.

“We are very pleased to reinstate our flights to Kano, which will greatly benefit those travelling to northern Nigeria,” said Tewolde Gebremariam, chief executive, Ethiopian Airlines Group.

“Ethiopian has an unwavering and proven commitment to Nigeria, with close to 55 years of service to the destination, long before any other foreign airline.

“As a truly indigenous Pan-African carrier, we consider our flights to Nigeria and elsewhere throughout Africa part of our responsibility to the development of the continent, serving as a vehicle for investment, trade, tourism and job creation,” he said.

“We thank the Government of Nigeria and its people for their continued support of our operations, and reaffirm our commitment to continuously enhancing our services for the benefit of passengers to Nigeria and worldwide.”

Kano will be the airline’s 49th African and 81st international destination.

Ethiopian currently serves 80 international destinations across five continents with more than 200 daily flights, and using the latest-technology aircraft including B777s and B787s.

easyJet keeps passengers switched on

easyJet has announced that from today, all passengers onboard will be allowed to use their personal electronic devices such as laptops, DVD players, tablets and mobile phones onboard in ‘Flight Mode’ throughout the whole flight including during take-off and landing.

Up until now, passengers have had to turn their devices off for both periods during the flight, and the change comes after recent recommendations from the European Aviation Safety Agency for these restrictions to be relaxed.

Peter Duffy, easyJet group commercial director, customer, product and marketing said: “We know that portable devices are an important part of our customers’ journey with us so we are pleased they can now use their electronic devices onboard in ‘Flight mode’ for the duration of their flight with us – we think this will be a popular change.”

easyJet submitted a detailed safety proposal to the Civil Aviation Authority which has been approved in line with all safety regulations, meaning that passengers will be able to continue watching films, reading e-books, working or drafting e-mails uninterrupted for longer.

The announcement comes just months after easyJet introduced the use of mobile boarding passes across 85 per cent of its network.

easyJet has one of the fastest apps in the industry which has been downloaded by nearly eight million passengers.
