​In November 1810, the British executed a surprise maneuver, landing at Bain Boeuf, near Cap Malheureux. The French garrison had concentrated its defenses around the anticipated landing spot at Mahébourg, leaving the north vulnerable. This tactical oversight led to the swift defeat of the French forces and the ultimate loss of the island. The French, stunned by the success of the northern attack, named the location Cap Malheureux (Cape of Misfortune) as a lasting memorial to the surprise and strategic failure that ceded the island to the British. The chapel, built over a century later, stands at the precise site of this colonial defeat, visually and spiritually reclaiming the space by affirming faith and aid against historical loss.
