Historically, the Western Gate of Dutsen Kanam served as an important entry point into fortified settlements and a means of defense against external threats. It was also used as a symbol of power and authority, marking the community's boundaries and showcasing its inhabitants' wealth and status.

A SHORT REFLECTION ON THE WESTERN GATE OF THE FAMOUS MOUNT KANAM (KPYOKBUL KYHAAM KHINANG)

The western gate of the Old Kanam Settlement (Kofar Dutsen Kanam) is one of the four main gates leading to the old Kanam Settlement (Kanam Kufai). Approximately eight kilometers behind it was the location of the old Kanam Palace, established by the renowned Chief of Kanam, Suleiman Pyokpang, who rebelled against the Bauchi dominion and founded the Kanam Kingdom. The other three gates were often closed, while only the western gate allowed passage, making it difficult for the Bauchi cavalry to enter.

Behind the gate lies the famous Dutsen Kanam (Kyam Byaktaam), where a miraculous all-season water source exists on the mountaintop. Sixteen kilometers south of Dutsen Kanam, there is Mount Kuzur. Mount Kuzur holds great historical significance as it served as a meeting point for the Bogghom people after driving away the Jukun king who had taken refuge there following raids on Hausa land (Kano). In the Jukun language, 'Ku' means king and 'zur' means to chase away. This episode forms the basis for the banter between the Bogghom and Jukun people.
