Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency Bye-Election

The All Progressives Congress, APC, has won the Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency by-election held on Saturday, September 19, 2026.

The party’s candidate, Engineer Usman Maijama’a Kallamu, secured 41,121 votes to emerge winner of the election conducted to fill the vacant seat in the House of Representatives.

The seat became vacant following the death of the former representative of the constituency, the late Hon. Yaya Bauchi Tongo.

According to the result announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, a total of 47,301 votes were cast, out of which 46,551 were valid, while 750 votes were rejected.

The Labour Party, LP, came second with 3,553 votes, followed by the Action Peoples Movement, APM, with 872 votes, while the National Democratic Party, NDP, scored 707 votes.

The election was conducted across 903 polling units in 31 registration areas covering Gombe, Kwami and Funakaye Local Government Areas.

Yobe breaks new ground in orthopaedic care with total hip replacement

Yobe State has recorded another milestone in specialised healthcare with the successful performance of a total hip replacement surgery at the Yobe State University Teaching Hospital, YSUTH.

The procedure was performed on a young man living with sickle cell disease who developed avascular necrosis of the head of the femur, a condition that occurs when reduced blood supply causes bone tissue to deteriorate.

The surgery, conducted on Saturday, involved replacing the damaged hip joint and was led by Dr Lawan Musa Yari, alongside Dr Musa Abdulmalik, Dr Bashok Palagvi, Mr Manasseh Jonah and Mr Karumi Ibrahim.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued by the Director-General, Press and Media Affairs to the Yobe State Governor, Alhaji Mamman Mohammed.

According to the Commissioner for Health, Dr Muhammad Lawan Gana, total hip replacement was previously unavailable in the state.

The latest procedure therefore expands the range of specialised surgical services now being provided through Yobe's public healthcare system.

Avascular necrosis can result in the collapse and deterioration of the affected bone when its blood supply is disrupted. In the case of the patient, the condition affected the head of the femur and was associated with sickle cell disease.

The development comes alongside other specialised medical interventions recorded in Yobe's public hospitals.

At the Damaturu Specialist Hospital, patients with kidney disease have continued to receive free dialysis, a service required by people whose kidneys are unable to adequately perform their functions.

The Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Prof. Usman Abba, had said access to the dialysis service was not restricted based on indigene status.

“There is no screening for citizenship or indigene status when you come for dialysis,” Abba said.

The Specialist Hospital also performed a complex maxillofacial operation earlier this year on a patient diagnosed with mandibular ameloblastoma, a tumour affecting the jaw.

The procedure involved removing the affected portion of the jaw and reconstructing it using plates and an iliac crest bone graft.

The introduction of total hip replacement at YSUTH adds another specialised procedure to those increasingly available in the state's public hospitals.

For patients requiring complex treatment, the availability of such services locally could reduce the need to travel outside Yobe for procedures that were previously unavailable in the state.

Sustaining and expanding the services, however, will require continued investment in specialist manpower, medical equipment, maintenance and other supporting infrastructure.

NSCDC Arrests Five Over Alleged Sale of Carcass Meat for Human Consumption in Yobe

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Yobe State Command, has arrested five persons, including a 42-year-old woman identified as Nancy Benedict, over the alleged purchase and processing of dead cattle for human consumption.

The suspects were arrested at the New Jerusalem area of Damaturu, the Yobe State capital.

NSCDC Public Relations Officer, Bala Garba, said the arrest followed intelligence received by the command regarding the woman's alleged activities.

“We got intelligence about her activities and followed her discreetly for two weeks. We eventually saw her purchasing two carcasses for N100,000, with the intention of processing the meat for human consumption,” Garba said.

He said operatives monitored the suspect during the surveillance period before making the arrest after allegedly witnessing the purchase of the two carcasses.

The five suspects were subsequently taken into custody as the command commenced investigation into the alleged operation.

The investigation is expected to establish the source and condition of the carcasses, how the meat was intended to be processed and whether any of it had already been sold or supplied to members of the public.

The alleged activity has also raised food safety concerns, particularly over the consumption of meat from animals that died without veterinary inspection.

The NSCDC said the investigation would determine the appropriate action to be taken based on its findings.

GMC RADIO REPORTS FIRE OUTBREAK AT ITS PREMISES

According to a report published on the GMC Radio page, a fire outbreak has gutted parts of the premises of the Gombe Media Corporation, GMC, destroying properties and personal belongings.

The incident occurred at about 3:50 p.m. on Saturday, affecting the corporation’s old television studio, maintenance section, radio library, News Director’s office and NYSC accommodation.

Personnel of the State and Federal Fire Spervices responded to the incident and successfully brought the fire under control.

No life was lost, although some people reportedly sustained minor injuries while attempting to salvage belongings and assist in the emergency response.

Some affected NYSC members reportedly lost valuable items, including laptops, sewing machines and important credentials.

The GMC Director-General, Malam Ibrahim Isa, described the incident as unfortunate and expressed gratitude that no life was lost.

Affected staff members have called for stronger fire prevention and safety measures to prevent a recurrence.

The affected sections of the corporation have since been secured.

GOMBE BY-ELECTION: POLICE DEPLOY PERSONNEL, RESTRICT MOVEMENT IN THREE LGAs

The Gombe State Police Command says it has deployed adequate personnel and operational assets across Gombe, Kwami and Funakaye Local Government Areas ahead of Saturday’s by-election.

The Command says the deployment, in collaboration with other members of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security, ICCES, covers INEC offices, polling units, collation centres and other strategic locations.

According to a press release signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Buhari Abdullahi, movement and commercial activities will be restricted across the three LGAs from 6:00AM to 6:00PM on Saturday, September 19, 2026, except for essential services.

The Police also warned against political thuggery, the circulation of fake news, brandishing of weapons and possession of incriminating items at polling units.
