“Walking above the rainforest at Kakum”
Kakum National Park is one of West Africa’s most famous rainforest reserves, known for its rich biodiversity and unique canopy walkway experience.
It is located in southern Ghana, about 30 km north of Cape Coast, Kakum National Park covers roughly 375 square kilometers of tropical rainforest. It was established in 1992 to protect the area’s wildlife and ecosystem, which had been threatened by logging and farming.
The park’s biggest attraction is its canopy walkway—a series of suspended bridges hanging about 30 meters (100 feet) above the forest floor. It stretches between tall trees and offers a rare, bird’s-eye view of the rainforest. It’s one of only a few canopy walkways in Africa, making it a must-see for visitors.
Kakum is home to a variety of animals like forest elephants, Diana monkeys, bongo antelopes, over 250 bird species, butterflies and reptiles although many are shy and not easily spotted.
Even if you don’t see large mammals, the forest itself is vibrant with sounds and plant life.
The park protects dense tropical rainforest with towering hardwood trees, some over 300 years old. Medicinal plants and rare species thrive here, making it important for conservation and research.
It is worthy of note that Kakum supports eco-tourism and helps raise awareness about environmental protection.
