Igboukwu the Source last Saturday Eke 13th June, 2026 played host to the eminent personalities sent to the town by HE Soludo on fact finding mission. They are:
The Honourable Commissioner for Culture, Tourism and Entertainment Hon. Udoji Amedu Okolo, his Housing Counterpart Hon. Arc. Henry Arinze, the Director General BPE Hon. Obi Okonkwo, the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Entertainment Hon. Jeremiah Iloka and the Member Representing Aguata II State Counstituency Hon. Engr. Tony Muobike and a host of others.
It will be recalled that the Anambra State House of Assembly last Thursday Afo 11th June, 2026 passed a Motion sponsored by Hon. Tony Muobike for the Declaration of National Yam House Etiti Village Igboukwu as a State Tourism Site.
The Governor sent them to among other things visit the proposed sites which included:
The Anambra State Museum, Ngo Village Igboukwu and National Yam House Etiti Village Igboukwu. They should ascertain whether there is land for the project and access to the site and other details of community partnership and involvement with investment in the proposed project.
The State Government intention is to make National Yam House Etiti Village Igboukwu a Tourism Hub for the State so that it will not be a site for only Yam Festival usage but a site for all the year round usage.
In view of the above more land is needed for State Project.
A meeting is scheduled to hold between the land owners, stakeholders and government on the best way to make the festival an International one and make the site to be the best.

HON. TONY MUOBIKE MOVES A MOTION CALLING ON GOVERNOR CHUKWUMA SOLUDO TO DIRECT THE COMMISIONER FOR CULTURE, TOURISM AND ENTERTAINMENT TO DECLARE AND DESIGNATE THE NATIONAL YAM HOUSE IGBO-UKWU AS AN OFFICIAL TOURISM AND FESTIVAL CENTRE IN ANAMBRA STATE

At a plenary of the Anambra State House of Assembly on 11th June 2026, the member representing Aguata II Constituency, Hon. Tony Muobike, moved a motion, urging ttt stte Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo(CFR) to direct the commissioner for culture, tourism and entertainment to declare and designate "The National Yam House" located at Igbo-Ukwu in Aguata LGA as an official tourism centre in Anambra state.

In his presentation. Hon. Muobike highlighted that in each of Nigeria's 3 broad geopolitical regions, there exists a national, and federally sanctioned cultural festival. In
the northern region, there is the Argungu Fishing Festival held annually in Birinin Kebbi , Kebbi State. In the Western region, there exists the Oshun- Oshogbo Festival held in Oshogbo, Osun State for rhe Yorubas. Both festivals are internationally renowned with the Oshun festival recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Festival. Igbos of the Eastern Region made representation to the Federal Government in 2004 for a similar festival named Iri Ji Ndi Igbo ( or New Yam Festival) to be recognized as a festival in the East. Approval was given and a National Yam House was built and commissioned in Igbo-Ukwu (at Etiti Village) by the National Tourism Development Corporation(NTDC) in 2007.

Igbo-Ukwu was chosen to site this festival given its antecedents in Igbo culture, a fact highlighted by the excavation of the stunning Igboukwu bronze artefact in 1958, which dates back to 900AD and is considered one of the oldest bronze artefacts in Africa.Because of these archeological finds, a museum had been established in Igbo-Ukwu in 2004 by National Commission for Museums and Monuments to showcase the artefacts.

Anambra Assembly Urges Soludo To Designate National Yam House Igboukwu As Tourist Centre

The Anambra State House of Assembly has called on Governor Chukwuma Soludo to direct the Commissioner for Culture, Tourism and Entertainment to designate the National Yam House, Igboukwu, as an official tourism and festival centre in the state.

The resolution followed a motion moved during today's plenary by the member representing Aguata Constituency Two, Honourable Tony Muobike, who said the move would help harness the tourism and cultural potential of the National Yam Festival domiciled in Igboukwu.

Presenting the motion, Honourable Muobike explained that the Federal Government had earlier designated three cultural festivals as national festivals for the major ethnic groups in Nigeria; according to him, the Argungu Fishing Festival represents the northern region, the Osun-Osogbo Grove Festival represents the western region, while the Iri Ji Ndi Igbo Festival, domiciled in Igboukwu, Anambra State, represents the eastern region.

The lawmaker recalled that on 4th October 2007, the Federal Government inaugurated the National Yam House in Etiti Village, Igboukwu, as the national secretariat for the Yam Festival in Nigeria, while noting that other cultural and tourism institutions were also established in the community to strengthen the festival, including the National Art Exhibition Centre, the Centre for African Arts and Civilization, the National Gallery of Art, the Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation, and the Nigerian Arts and Cultural Directory Project.

Honourable Muobike further stated that Igboukwu has remained a centre of cultural renaissance following the discovery of the famous Igboukwu Bronze in 1958, which has been dated to about 900 AD and recognised as one of Africa's oldest archaeological artefacts.
