The Origin of Tella: A Name Linked to Elephants

According to Mambilla oral history, the name Tella is derived from the Mambilla word “Tell,” meaning elephant.

Historical accounts passed down through local tradition suggest that the area now known as Tella was once home to large numbers of elephants. These animals were a significant feature of the area's natural environment, and the name Tella is believed to have originated from their presence.

This story reflects the close relationship between the Mambilla people, their ancestral land, wildlife and the natural environment. Preserving this oral tradition helps ensure that the history and cultural identity of Tella are passed on to future generations.
