REGISTER FOR REFEST 1 TODAY
10 SLOTS ONLY.

Theme: HOW TO REBUILD AN AFRICAN CITY

In 'Still Becoming: At Home in Lagos, Chimamanda Ngozi -Adichie writes of Lagos as "a city in a state of shifting impermanence .... where "houses sprout up on land reclaimed from the sea, .... where "buildings are knocked down so that ambitious new ones might live, where a street last seen six months ago is different today. Truly, the rapid changes are the work of urban actors chiefly government and real estate developers. In the relentless er****on of structures, capital is esteemed over historical data, adoption of local materials and imagination. This leads to heightened socio-economic inequality, lack of inclusion and summarily an un-sustainable Lagos.

Hence, this inaugural edition of Re.Fest aims to address these gaps by re-training students in the built environment faculties on the past, present and future of Lagos through digitization / data documentation hackathons, showcase of local materials and an immersive VR/AR/AI Workshop respectively. These events will be sandwiched by an Opening panel with thought leaders from multiple sectors and a Closing Showcase & Induction Day to usher the participants into mentorship relationships with invited studios, labs and and university centers to continue to build on their learning.

Remember to register TODAY.

On 12 September 2023, Sam Ayimora, S.O. (steelworkers), Azeez and Bimbo Ajani (masons) worked a difficult night shift to see a heavy metal door relocated swiftly before our site at the time: the 2600+ sqm Vibranium Valley Tech Campus resumed the next day. All four men were to resume the next day on another private residence we worked on in , leaving families behind to heavy-lift our designs into shape.

Other architects and developers rarely talk about brilliant artisans who bring their ideas to life. We choose to esteem them ! Thus, it is to them that we owe this particular Workers' Day.

Happy Workers' Day 2024 !

07/03/2024

Like my friend, Ope Ogunlade, I know what it feels like to leave a secondary city to a major city in search of a university degree or work. I get stories like Dr Sam Adeyemi's, TuFace, or MI Abaga's. All left Ilorin, Makurdi, and Jos respectively, to relocate to Lagos with the proverbial 'one bag' in their hands.

We had the struggles that a typical Lagosian would never have. I dreaded returning from Ibadan to the University of Lagos after the holiday breaks because of the insensitive 1-week delay between the resumption of classes and the full takeoff of hostels. I dreaded having to sleep in our mosquito-infested architecture studios or making the long commute to my cousin's house far out on the outskirts of Lagos.

Ope's wise counsel for our parents to rent an apartment in the Lecturers' Quarters saved my brother, and I in our third year at University of Lagos when the nationwide university lecturers strike sacked students from hostels. It wasn't until I studied in Brighton, detached from families and friends, that I realized how we had stared homelessness in the face. Because, where would I have lived when cash was short and I could no longer afford the students' homes next to my uni's campus if not for the cheap non-university hostels that saved me?

Now let's flip the script a bit, to picture a scenario where a Lagosian goes to study in a university town like Ife without information on places to live, or hostels to lodge. One where s/he is forced to take space in a hotel because our country's economic landscape has esteemed hotels more than hostels. What about one where that student is female and has to deal with the additional risk of assault or harassment? That picture becomes - in Femi Anikulapo-Kutis words - one where there is "no place for our dreams".

Beyond seeking an abode for university, younger people are finding it harder to find a place to live while looking for work. A younger friend once left Ibadan with a 24-hour notice to resume a plum job in VI, Lagos. Someone who had a comfortable family home would sweat out the next 23 hours seeking a friend's house to live. He was lucky to find a friend in the deeper, un-motorable ends of Ajah but I cringe to imagine there are many more who don't make this ladder up into the big cities. Many of such stories reveal how the present economic landscape clips the wings of young people.

There are no longer the promised homes like the bungalow given to 28-year-old Subomi Balogun who was headhunted from England by the Western Nigerian government and Taslim Elias. Long gone are the assured first homes that early career lecturers got back in the day. There are no nests or niches where we can perch in the different cities and communities of our motherland.

Nigeria's and I believe Africa's youth must be able to roam free within their country and continent to work, study, and play. Not everyone will have the means to relocate to the West. For those who will form 1 in 4 people in the world residing in Africa by 2050, we will need to pool resources to build more hostels not hotels. We will need to complement that with co-working spaces to nurture entrepreneurs, who will build new businesses that create jobs. Of course, you and I know that there is no getting out of youth homelessness without dealing decisively with joblessness.

I am bullish and making a big bet on plugging the hostels /co • working spaces gap in our cities and communities as a path to social impact and profit. Are you as well?
