Lagos Island is where the story of modern Lagos comes alive.

Once the historic administrative and commercial heart of Lagos, the island is packed with layers of history, from indigenous Isale Eko and the Brazilian Quarter to colonial era buildings, historic markets, religious landmarks and streets that have witnessed generations of change.

Take a walk through Broad Street, Marina, Campos, Tinubu Square and the old quarters, and you will find remarkable buildings and landmarks that tell stories of trade, migration, colonial rule, independence and the evolution of Lagos into a major African city.

For me, Lagos Island is one of Nigeria’s most fascinating places for a heritage walking tour. You do not just see old buildings here. You walk through layers of history, culture, architecture and everyday Lagos life.

There is so much to discover, and almost every street has a story.
