Fishing has long been the backbone of Badagry’s economy. By the 1880s, the town exported fish, alongside coconuts, cassava, and palm oil, to Lagos, 34 miles away. Markets bustled with fresh seafood, including crabs and prawns, and traditional dishes like Egun-style fish pepper soup became local staples. The Ilaje fishing community, established in 1991 along Badagry’s coast, exemplifies the continuity of artisanal fishing, with 36 fish species from 22 families recorded in a 2017 study. Fisherfolk used shrimp nets with varying mesh sizes and preserved catches using traditional smoking kilns, a practice still common today.
