South Africa unveils 5 year visa policies for Nigerians to boost bilateral ties, tourism

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has unveiled streamlined visa procedures to ease travel for Nigerian business people and tourists.

The updated measures include the issuance of five-year multiple-entry visas and an option for Nigerian tourists to apply without submitting their passports physically.

Ramaphosa announced the initiatives on Tuesday, December 3, during the 11th session of the Nigeria-South Africa Bi-National Commission (BNC) in Cape Town, which was attended by Nigerian President Bola Tinubu.

The South African leader emphasized the importance of these steps in fostering stronger bilateral ties and enhancing economic and cultural exchanges between the two nations.

“Our efforts to create a favourable environment included simplifying the visa process for Nigerian business people travelling to South Africa. Qualifying Nigerian business people were granted a five-year multiple-entry visa,” he said.

He reaffirmed South Africa’s commitment to strengthening economic partnerships and resolving barriers that hinder investment opportunities.

“As we marked 30 years of diplomatic relations, we saw a bright future for our relationship. Our strong bonds of friendship provided a solid foundation for more meaningful economic cooperation,” Ramaphosa said.

President Ramaphosa recognized Nigeria’s support in hosting South African companies while highlighting South Africa’s reciprocal openness to Nigerian businesses.

“We needed to remove the remaining constraints to greater investment and address some of the challenges faced by companies,” he said.

The president praised Nigeria’s efforts to improve its business climate, emphasizing the significance of these reforms in attracting investment from South Africa and other international partners.

“Our government continued its efforts to improve the ease of doing business in South Africa. We wanted to enable investors to operate, trade, and pursue opportunities across various sectors,” he added.

“We looked forward to seeing more Nigerian companies invest in South Africa.”

President Ramaphosa addressed broader development challenges across the continent, reaffirming South Africa’s commitment to advancing the African Union’s Agenda 2063 within the framework of the G20.

“It was the first time the G20 Leaders’ Summit would be held on African soil. We sought to galvanise support for the AU’s Agenda 2063 as we pursued an inclusive global agenda,” he said.

Canada to halt issuance of 10-year multiple entry tourist visas

Canada will no longer automatically grant 10-year multiple-entry visas to tourists, according to new guidelines issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.

This decision marks a shift from the previous practice where eligible visitors were routinely issued long-term visas, permitting multiple entries over a decade.

Under the revised rules, immigration officers now have discretion to issue visas with shorter durations based on individual assessments.

Instead of a default extended validity period, each application will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

Officers can decide whether to grant a single-entry or multiple-entry visa and determine its duration, moving away from the automatic issuance of maximum-validity multiple-entry visas.

“Guidance has been updated to indicate that multiple-entry visas issued to maximum validity are no longer considered to be the standard document. Officers may exercise their judgement in deciding whether to issue a single or multiple-entry visa and in determining the validity period,” said the IRCC.

The IRCC explained that this change is part of a broader strategy aimed at managing temporary immigration levels while addressing ongoing challenges such as housing shortages and rising living costs.

MONKEYPOX OUTBREAK: FG TO SCREEN INBOUND INTERNATIONAL PASSENGERS

We have received reports that the Federal Ministry of Health and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention have designed a health declaration form for international passengers to guide against the surging new strain of monkeypox in some African countries from spreading to Nigeria.

The ministry of health has mandated all travellers entering the country to fill and submit a health declaration form over the monkeypox (Mpox) outbreak in some parts of Africa.

The ministry said the directive, instituted to curb the spread of the disease, takes effect today, August 11, for passengers arriving the airports in Abuja and Lagos.

Travellers can access and fill the form online or print and fill a physical copy.

The ministry encouraged all passengers to fill and submit the form online before departing their locations to avoid delays upon arriving in Nigeria.

The Nigeria Health Declaration Form must be filled out by all incoming passengers to Nigeria. Paper-based versions will be provided on arrival in Nigeria for passengers unable to fill the form,” information on the ministry’s website reads.

“This form is an instituted measure to prevent the spread, monitor the possible importation of infectious diseases and aid the control of disease outbreaks thereby protecting the health of all Nigerians.”

The form requires personal information of the traveller. The traveller is also required to provide their travel, health and contact history in the 21 days preceding their arrival.

On Friday, the Africa Centre for Disease Control (CDC) said it will likely declare a public health emergency of continental security (PHECS) over mpox in the coming week.

This is because a new variant of the disease known as Clade Ib is spreading, mostly in Congo.

Rwanda, Uganda and Kenya have also reported cases of the new variant since mid-July.

Jean Kaseya, director-general of Africa CDC, said on Thursday that reported cases on the continent had risen by 79 percent from 2022-2023 and by 160 percent from 2023-2024.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has also said that Africa is experiencing an unprecedented rise in cases this year.

BULGARIA AND ROMANIA WILL BE PART OF THE SCHENGEN AREA FROM 31 MARCH.

From 31 March this year, Romania and Bulgaria will join the Schengen zone, which allows free movement between member states for 400 million citizens.

The two countries have been members of the European Union (EU) since 2007 but as they were not part of the border-free area, travelers were still required to show passports upon entry.
In 2024, border controls for the two countries will be simplified

According to Euronews Reports, Travellers arriving by air or sea from other Schengen zone countries will no longer have to show passports upon arrival. This means passengers on flights, cruises, and ferries will not be subject to checks.
