Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport in U.S. Turns Completely Solar Energy Powered

Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport is turning heads by becoming the first airfield in the United States powered by 100% solar energy.

The Federal Aviation Administration funded $5 million for the completion of 2.64 megawatt solar farm. Within a span of 20 years the investment is expected to be earned back as the renewable energy stream will bring down the facility’s overall cost of operation.

The installation is about the size of 16 football fields –eight long and two wide.

Terry Hart, president and CEO of the Chattanooga Airport said that it was a momentous day for the Chattanooga Airport as they have completed their solar farm and achieved a major sustainability milestone.

The project will have immediate benefits to the airport and community and he felt proud to set an example in renewable energy for other airports, businesses and religion.

Along with generating a local renewable resource they are also increasing the economic efficiency of the airport.

The airport solar farm saves energy via storage units that permits operations after sundown.

The Chattanooga Airport’s operation is relatively small and it has direct flight to just ten cities that includes Chicago, Dallas, New York via Allegiant, American, Delta and United Airlines.

However, the airport still reflected traffic growth in 2018 showing an increase of 4% from the earlier record for total of 504,298 passengers.

On a global level the Chattanooga Airport has joined the likes of South Africa’s George Airport, The Galapagos’ Seymour Airport and India’s Cochin International Airport that became the world’s first solar-powered airport in 2015

AIR PEACE BEGINS FLIGHT OPERATIONS TO AKURE

Air Peace, one of Nigeria’s domestic carriers, is deepening competition in the airline business with the launch of its maiden flight into the Akure Airport for Friday, August 11.

A statement issued by Chris Iwarah, the corporate communications manager of the airline, said the carrier was collaborating with the Rotimi Akeredolu administration to guarantee easy access to Ondo State by investors, tourists and other categories of air travellers.

The inaugural Lagos-Akure-Lagos flight, the statement added, would take off from the airline’s Murtala Muhammed Airport, Ikeja hub at 1pm and touch down at the Akure Airport at 1.40pm.

The return flight, Air Peace said, would depart the Akure Airport at 2.10pm and land at the Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos at 2.50pm.

“Air Peace is pleased to have this opportunity to add such an important destination as Akure to our local route network. Akure lies geographically on the tropical belt and is bordered in the north by Ekiti and Kogi; east by Edo; west by Oyo and Ogun. Ondo is one of Nigeria’s most exciting destinations for leisure and business travel,” the statement said. “The flights to Akure will open up a whole new opportunity for Air Peace guests to visit and explore the wealth of tourist attractions of the state as well as expand the access of investors and other categories of air travellers to connect with the state.”

“The new route allows for connections to additional markets from Akure, creating a more convenient trip for those wishing to visit the city.

“We expect that our new service will contribute to the economy of Ondo State by bringing new travellers to the area from across our route network, while at the same time offering greater competitive choice for the air travel public and passenger connectivity for the area to all the destinations we serve. We anticipate that the launch will jump-start the effort of His Excellency, Governor Rotimi Akeredolu to open up the the Sunshine State to massive investment engagements.

“We are committed to offering all Air Peace guests first-class service and innovation, both on board and on the ground,” the statement said.

Air Peace, which commenced commercial flight operations to a record five destinations in 2014, currently has presence in Lagos, Abuja, Benin, Uyo, Port Harcourt, Calabar, Enugu, Owerri, Sokoto and Accra-Ghana.

Around the close of 2016, the airline embarked on a massive route and fleet expansion project. Besides securing approvals to operate flights into Lome, Monrovia, Abidjan, Dakar, Douala, Niamey and other West Coast countries of Africa, the carrier has also been designated by the Federal Government to do flights into international destinations, including Johannesburg, Atlanta, Dubai, Guangzhou-China, London and Mumbai.

Air Peace, which lifted a third of all air travellers in the country in the first quarter of this year, recently embarked on acquisition of more aircraft, comprising a couple of Boeing 737, Boeing 777 and Embraer 145 jets, to bring its fleet size to about 24 aircraft.

SpaceX To Send Two Tourists Around The Moon In 2018

SpaceX has announced that it will fly two private customers on a tourist trip around the moon next year. The travellers will undergo fitness tests and begin training later this year.

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk announced on Monday afternoon that the space tourists had already placed a significant deposit for the trip.

It will be the first-ever privately-funded tourist flight beyond the International Space Station will use a spaceship under development for NASA astronauts.

The cost of the trip has not been revealed, but the Russian government had previously charged space tourists around $20 million each for a trip to the International Space Station.

The flight, using a Dragon crew capsule and a Falcon heavy rocket, would last about a week. The spaceship would circle the moon, skimming the lunar surface, and then travel deeper into space, up to 400,000 miles away, before returning to Earth.

For takeoff, SpaceX will use the same launch pad near Cape Canaveral, Florida, that was used for the Apollo programs missions. No humans have traveled past low Earth orbit since the final Apollo mission in 1972.

The company doesn’t expect this to be a one-time mission. SpaceX said that other people have expressed strong interest in making the trip.

The crew Dragon capsule has not yet flown in space. Neither has a Falcon Heavy rocket, which is essentially a Falcon 9 rocket with two strap-on boosters, according to Musk. He said there will be ample time to test both the spacecraft and the rocket, before the moon mission.

Arik Air Flight Makes Emergency Landing

Friday, 11th November 2016 saw Arik Air flight 662, which departed Lagos for Jos, make an emergency landing in Lagos.
It developed a technical fault at 39,000 feet above sea level, after flying for about 20 minutes. A passenger in the ill-fated aircraft said "the flight was supposed to take off at 11:20 am but was shifted by one hour. After one hour, it didn't take off. We spent more than 3 extra hours before the rain started. We were told we had to wait for the rain to stop. When the rain finally stopped, the flight departed. After flying for about 20 minutes, We started hearing some strange sound. We didn't know exactly what was happening and the announcement came that the flight developed a technical fault. In reality, the right engine went into flames. Those who were seated close to the right engine didn't want to tell us what was going on. The aircraft headed back to the Lagos airport but this time, to the international wing. I saw my death but I prayed to my God and sang to the mother of God. And that saved me. All other passengers also prayed. I have rescheduled my flight. I will be travelling tomorrow".

All efforts to speak with the officials of Arik Air at the time of this report proved abortive.

New Action Plan By UK Government To Boost Domestic Tourism

The UK government has released a series of measures which are designed to augment the domestic tourism sector. Named under the ‘Tourism Action Plan’, , the agenda aims to capitalise on the weaker pound currently making trips cheaper for overseas visitors. Following the Brexit, the value of pound has fallen from $1.49 on the day of the referendum to $1.28 in July and August. Speaking generally, the international visitors are expected to benefit from the Leave vote as prices fall.

Deregulation is the crux of the new plan.

The owners will be able to give guests a lift from train stations to their accommodation.

According to the new measure, an amendable apprentice scheme for seasonal workers, for instance, those from the hospitality industry will allow businesses to train staff over 18 months rather than 12.

The other announcement by the government announced a series of new single-booking. This will fix rail itineraries to encourage visitors to travel from one part of the country to another. Discover England fund will share a part of £40 million fund to the projects which will encourage tourists to travel beyond London.

Prime Minister Theresa May said the Brexit vote created “real opportunities for growth” in the tourism sector.

VisitBritain also came out in support of the agenda after the measures were declared. In an explained statement, it said that they strongly support the launch of the Tourism Action Plan which will outlines the government’s plans to ensure the continued success of the tourism industry. It last year generated £22.1 billion in spending from inbound tourism to Britain and £19.6 billion from domestic overnight tourism spend in England.

VisitEngland completed a hugely successful first phase of the £40 million Discover England Fund which attracted a humungous number of high quality bids, far outweighing the allocated funding available for year one. In their official statement, they stated that tourism is a fiercely competitive global industry and the Tourism Action Plan demonstrates the Government’s commitment to improve their competitive tourism offer which includes making it easier for visitors to explore Britain using our extensive transport network.
