Here's the honest truth: your ticket price in June and your reschedule fee today are two completely different things.

Let's break it down simply.

1. Your Ticket Is a "Seat Contract," Not a Flexible Pass

When you bought that ticket for ₦X naira in June, you paid for:

· A specific date
· A specific time
· A specific flight number
· A specific fare class (business, economy, premium, saver, flex, etc.)

That price was based on supply and demand at the time you booked. It does not include the right to change your mind later without cost unless you bought a flexible fare that explicitly says otherwise.

2. The Reschedule Fee Covers Real Airline Costs

When you move your flight, the airline has to:

- Re-price your new flight at today's fare which could be higher or lower
- Pay rebooking overheads like, system updates, seat reallocation etc
- Potentially forfeit a seat someone else could have bought at a higher price

So the reschedule fee isn't a "penalty." It's a cost-recovery mechanism for breaking the original contract you agreed to.

3. Tips to Avoid Surprises Next Time

• Read your fare rules before clicking "Purchase Ticket." If it says "non-refundable" or "change fees apply," believe it. Fees and fare differences often increase closer to departure.

• Keep your booking reference handy and check if your airline offers free changes for valid reasons e.g., medical emergencies, weather or flight disruptions.

Flying for 10 years or more, doesn't make the fare rules bend. It just means you have probably been lucky enough not to need a change until now. And to first-timers: you're not being cheated. You're being charged exactly what you agreed to when you purchased that ticket.

Why Will Check-In Counter Closed For A 6:45am Flight When I Arrived Airport At 6:30am?

Honestly, the airline wasn't wrong.

Here is the maths no one want to hear:

Check-in opens 4:45am for 6:45am flight and closes 6:00am. That is, 45 minutes before takeoff

Boarding end approximately 6:25am

Meaning, arriving airport at 6:30am is too late for check-in and boarding

To avoid this in your subsequent flight, please note the following:

- Be at the airport 2hrs early for local flight and 3hrs for international

- Check-in online 24hrs before flight date

- Pack only necessary items to skip baggage drop queues

- Keep travel documents in one easily accessible pouch

You have checked-in and obtain your boarding pass. So how did you miss the flight? ✈️

It is easy to call it carelessness. usually, it is. Once you clear check-in, the finish line is close. But distraction is a real enemy in the departure hall.

I have noticed that passengers who miss flights after getting their boarding pass usually fall into the below traps:

- The "not audible" Announcement. They claim they didn't hear it despite several announcements being made during boarding

- The Movie Trap. They start a film on their mobile device and lose track of time.

- The Noise Cancellation Zone. Noise-cancelling earphones are great for engine roar, but dangerous for your flight status.

- Lack of Situational Awareness. Treating the departure lounge like your living room.

How to fix this on your next flight:

• Set a vibrating alarm. As soon as you find a seat, set your phone for about 10 minutes before your boarding time.

• If you must wear earphone, turn off noise cancellation so you can hear gate change announcement.

• Watch the flight monitor screen frequently. Not your screen

• Stay near the gate. Don't wander to the far end of terminal for a specific coffee shop.

Having a boarding pass isn't a ticket to relax. It is a contract to be present. Don't let a thousand naira coffee cost you thousands of rebooking fee.
