*A conversation with Nigeria – Do we need another traditional politician?*

11th April 2022 will be etched in history as the day Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, PYO to those who know him well and to those who profess to know him well (the writer is neither, so is sticking to his official title), finally ended the uncertainties, rumours, innuendos and indefiniteness by formally declaring his candidacy for the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. _Will history be kind to his candidacy? Time, as they say, will be the judge!_

When Shirley Chisholm, first black woman to make a bid for the Presidency of the United States, announced her candidacy, she said “I want to be remembered as a catalyst for change in America”. With “change” having been the rallying cry of President Buhari’s regime under which the Vice President would have served for 8 years when the second term ends, will the Vice President still be the man of “change” to lead Nigeria to that better and glorious future all well-meaning Nigerians pray and hope for?

Winston Churchill, arguably Britain’s greatest war leader, once said “To improve is to change”. Most Nigerians, even those not disposed to Osinbajo, will likely agree he will, if elected, be an improvement on civic engagement in Nigeria even if only in relation to his verbal communication skills. It is though not the role nor the intention of this writer to extol or wax lyrical on the many virtues and accomplishments of the Vice President. More erudite and persuasive writers have done this already, with more no doubt to come in the nearest future. It is also not the role nor the aim of this writer to disparage or cast aspersions on the presidency of President Muhammad Buhari. President Buhari was the leader Nigeria needed after 16 years of PDP misrule. Whether or not, he achieved all Nigerians hoped for is a matter of contentious debate. His supporters will argue he did all he could within the constraints of what was available, pointing to increased and massive spending on infrastructure from railways to roads, while naysayers will point to deterioration in standard of living and, rampant or sporadic acts of banditry and terrorism that appear to go unpunished. History will render its judgment in due course.

What stands out and will no doubt draw a lot of Nigerians to the Vice President is that his integrity is unquestioned and unimpeachable. This is a man who can hold his head high and declare to the world, I have no skeletons nor hidden agenda. No fear of sordid tales of hidden wealth, corrupt riches, illegal funds or unexplained sources of income to titillate the olfactory senses. Of how many Nigerians in a position of governance can this be truly said?. I posit that I will not run out of fingers for counting before concluding the list.

With the Vice President’s integrity intact, what else do Nigerians require and desire in a man to lead Nigeria at this important and auspicious junction in its history; a country in turmoil and darkness (and not just from the collapse of electricity infrastructure), with citizens scrapping and scraping to feed their families in unsecured environments even as the elite and the chattering classes build their grandiose houses with 24hrs power supply in secure environments to keep the barbarians (i.e. the masses) out.

What unites the rich, poor, strong, weak, Christians and Muslims and anyone else who lies in between or has fallen through the gaps is “whither thou goest” Nigeria?

In this 21st century, should Nigeria take a left turn and follow the same geriatric politicians (with varying and dizzying ages often defying mathematical addition and subtraction skills) that have held the country in their vice like grip for decades, knowing it will be more of the same – underdeveloped and full of untapped potential? Alternatively, should Nigeria turn right and choose a non-politician, a man who most Nigerians barely knew 8 years ago, but whom with the evidence we have seen, appear to be what Nigeria desperately requires and, is willing to decry and deny the negative forces that once again seek to hold Nigeria back? Put simply, if less adroitly, do we follow one of the brightest and most intellectual of Nigerians who is relatable, understands what is needed and whose ambition is to serve his people or do we follow the same self-serving old and infirm politicians we would not trust with our wallet but want us to trust them with the country’s purse strings?

“Effective leadership is not about making speeches or being liked; leadership is defined by results not attributes.” Undeniably, the Vice President makes great speeches, befitting of one of Nigeria’s brightest and best legal minds and a Senior Advocate of Nigeria. His record, when he managed the Social Investment program from N-Power to TraderMoni have left an indelible mark on the country. He is also well liked across the country as evident by record crowds that greet him wherever he goes, seeking to touch him and be seen with him as if to bestow some of his greatness on them. Does the Vice President though have the results to show he will be an effective leader for Nigeria?

I must express my gratitude to the group “Identify the Right Leader” for dealing extensively with the achievements of the Vice President in their report titled “Osinbajo – An Impact Assessment Report”. I would commend all Nigerians to read the report with its impactful insights on his achievements (N-Power, TraderMoni, Homegrown School Feeding Programme to name just a few). The report says better what the writer could only have hoped to say here. Are these achievements sufficient to commend that the Vice President will be an effective leader for Nigeria?

The answer to the question and to all doubtful questions as to his leadership qualities is unquestionably *“YES HE WILL BE”.*

According to Chief Obafemi Awolowo, “Those of us placed in a position of leadership must be prepared to grasp the nettle if we unite in doing so, and if, in addition, we set a worthy example and a marat on pace in probity, unselfishness, and self-sacrifice, the people will follow, all too readily, in our footsteps.”

Even his opponents, of which no doubt, there are many will accept the Vice President has certainly grasped the nettle of leadership, not only through his position as Vice President for nearly seven years, but also in seeking to replace Buhari. He has not sought to assume to the office of President by claiming to be entitled to be coronated, having served as Vice President nor has he declared it to be his God given right or ambition. Instead, as all great leaders are wont to, he has instead put himself forward as demanded by his people. The petition of the Concerned Citizens of Nigeria, being one of such demands. A leader, they say, must respond to the clarion call of his people to lead them, not because he wants to but because he has no choice but to obey the call of his people. As to probity, even his detractors do not deny the Vice President is a man of unimpeachable integrity. “Any nation that does not emphasise integrity will always fail.” – Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

Is the Vice President unselfish though and willing to sacrifice his good for the betterment of others? Before addressing these questions, we are reminded of the words of Tafa Balewa, first Prime Minister of Nigeria. “I am convinced, and I want you also to be convinced, that the future of this vast country must depend, in the main, on the efforts of ourselves to help ourselves. This we cannot do if we do not work together in unity.”

To understand a man is to know what he holds dear. The Vice President is known as a man of strong faith, disciplined and willing to live according to the tenets of his faith. When he chooses to admonish and stand against some of his faith, we must listen and behold.

To know whether the Vice President is unselfish and willing to sacrifice, we must look to what he says and does in private and, if that is not available, look to what he says to his friends, to those who know him well. In the Vice President’s words:

_“If the church says we will not accept you here or that we will expose you if you are stealing the resources of the country or stealing the resources of a private company or other establishment, where you work, then we would not have the type of problem that we have in this country. If only the church does so – just the church.”_

These are the words of a man who sees power as seeking to do good for all and not just for his friends or members of his tribe. If a man is willing to call out his friends, even if not convenient or politically the right thing to do, surely this is a man to be trusted with the country’s purse strings, a man who will “set a worthy example and a marat on pace in probity, unselfishness, and self-sacrifice” for the people to follow.

As we reflect on the various candidacies that have been announced and those to come, we must ask ourselves - who do we consider to be the best candidate to take Nigeria forward, not because he is a member of our tribe or our friend or of our faith? With PYO (at this stage the writer now professes to know him well) as President in 2023, will Nigeria be better in 2027 than it is now? Even if the Lord or Allah has since called you to sit by his side, will PYO as President bequeath a better Nigeria to your children and loved ones than it is now? Will PYO be a break from the past history of failures?

If your answers to at least 2 of these 3 questions is a resounding “YES”, get out and campaign, vote, educate, contribute and do everything within your power to ensure he is chosen as the candidate for APC and, subsequently, voted in as President. Your country will be grateful to you. Your family will laud you. Generations of Nigerians to come will applaud you. Africa will thank you.

On my part, after much consideration, deliberation and prayers, I commend to you PYO, a man able to join the pantheon of great leaders, to stand on the shoulders of Awolowo, Azikiwe and Balewa and other great leaders of Nigeria to lead Nigeria, his people, to the promised land of development, infrastructure, security and prosperity for all. He is the leader Nigerian needs in 2023. He is indeed the “chosen” one. HE IS THE ONE!!

In the words of the Vice President himself, *“Great economies and great nations, prosperity, and abundance of nations and communities are created by men and not spirits.”*

Indiscriminate Parking of Trucks On Expressway Causing Accidents - Badagry Residents

Residents say truck drivers had turned the portion between Ibereko and the roundabout to their parking lots.

Some residents of Badagry in Lagos State on Thursday decried what they called indiscriminate parking of some trucks on Lagos - Badagry Expressway.

They told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Badagry that the uncoordinated parking was causing accidents and hardship for other road users.

NAN reports that since the Federal Government reopened land borders, some trucks carrying cement to the neighbouring countries like Republic of Benin, Togo, Ghana and Senegal, had been passing through the expressway.

It reports that most of the trucks used to park along the expressway indiscriminately to take a respite before continuing with their journey outside the country.

Commenting, Babatunde Adeyemi, Diocese of Anglican Communion, Cathedral Church of St. Thomas, Badagry, Lagos State, said the truck drivers had turned the portion between Ibereko and the roundabout to their parking lots.

According to him, the drivers are gradually taking over one of the two lanes without anybody checking them.

Mr Adeyemi said the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and other traffic officials seemed not to notice that the trucks presence was a problem to motorists.

"The local government should check them now before they become a menace to other road users.

"Both state and local governments should find a place for them to pack so that other road users will not be put to unnecessary difficulties," he said.

Similarly, Samuel Ofade, a traditional chief in Badagry, said that motorists were not finding it easy plying the road, especially at Toriko Junction in Ajara.

"This dangerous parking has caused many accidents and untold hardship on the people living in Badagry.

"Youths are agitating to raise a gathering to send the truck drivers off the said areas of the roads, if the government will not do something," he said.

In his reaction, Idowu Jimoh, a community leader, urged the drivers to consider other road users while parking on the expressway.

"Since the Federal Government announced land borders reopening, the trucks have taken over our roads.

"While traffic agents arrest other road users who parked along the expressway, they allowed the trucks to park any how, this is not good, we are all equal before the law," he said.

When contacted, Ganiyu Olalekan, the Treasurer, National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), said the arbitrary parking had caused accidents to many of their commercial buses plying the expressway.

"It is always dark in the night and those trucks have occupied the motorable parts of the expressway leaving our drivers to struggle with half way left.

"We have reported this to the Police and Neighborhood Corps, but nothing is happening. We want to beg the agency in charge of the road to find a place for them," he said.

However, Sunday Emmanuel, a vulcanizer whose workshop is at the expressway where the drivers park their trucks, said the drivers usually arrive at the spot from 11.00 p.m.

Mr Emmanuel added that the drivers often leave their trucks till evening of the following day before coming back to move their truck across the border.

In his views, Sulaiman Taiwo, the Unit Commander, FRSC Badagry, told NAN that the command had written a letter to the transport managers of the companies that owned the trucks, complaining about the arbitrary parking by their drivers on the expressway.

Mr Taiwo said that the command would be meeting them on June 1 to discuss the issue.

He said the trucks would no longer be allowed to park on the road again.

FAAN Conducts Aircraft Accident Simulation in Abuja

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has conducted an aircraft crash and rescue simulation exercise at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

The operation which happened on Tuesday simulated an aircraft crash scene, the rescue response operations, the family frenzy situation and media engagements in real time.

Our correspondent who witnessed the simulation exercise reports that firefighters, emergency rescue operators, and all relevant stakeholders were deployed.

Speaking after the exercise, the Manager, Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Mr. Mahmud Sani, said all noticed gaps will be closed because that is the real essence of the exercise.

He said the exercise is also a part of the processes that the airport needs for its recertification.

"This was meant to test the safety and emergency plan of the airport in preparation for its re-certification", adding that, "the exercise was also aimed at examining how the response agencies managed and responded to emergencies at the scene of an accident."

He also said the exercise is carried out yearly to prepare and test-run the emergency equipment at the airport in case of any emergency.

Deputy General Manager, Aerodrome Rescue and Fire Fighting Department, Rimdap Nantim, said the exercise was meant to test the emergency response and collaboration procedures at the airport.

According to him, the air crash simulation exercise was to also help ascertain the level of coordination among the response teams at the scene of the accident.

NPA Says Challenges Facing Call-Up System To Be Resolved Soon

The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) will soon resolve all teething challenges impeding the smooth implementation of the electronic call-up system for trucks doing business at the ports, its Acting Managing Director, Mr Mohammed Bello-Koko, said on Tuesday in Lagos.

Bello-Koko made the pledge while interacting with truck owners and drivers during his visit to the Lilipond Terminal in Ijora.

A statement signed by Mr Olaseni Alakija, General Manager, Corporate and Strategy Communications, said that the visit was to enable the Acting Managing Director have a firsthand assessment of the IT infrastructure built for the call-up system, which is domiciled in the terminal.

It quoted him as saying that he was at the terminal to re-evaluate the performance of the truck call-up system three months after it was deployed.

“I also want to engage directly with the service users to appreciate their concerns and those bottlenecks arising from their subscription of the traffic management platform.

“All teething issues arising from the truck call-up system will be addressed progressively; both the online scheduling process and truck transit arrangement will be fine tuned to check against manipulation and other related irregularities.

“We will ensure that the entire process is fully automated and secured to prevent counterfeiting, while priority will be given to export cargoes in line with the economic diversification agenda of the Federal Government,” the statement quoted him as saying.

Chief Remi Ogungbemi, President of the Association of Maritime Truck Owners (AMATO), who spoke on behalf of operators doing business at the port, expressed his delight over the unannounced visit of the Acting Managing Director.

He described the visit as a demonstration of the Acting Managing Director’s affirmation that the truck call-up system was a priority. “We are very happy you are here.

It shows clearly that you are a listening and focused leader, who is prepared to tackle the critical issues affecting port business in our country.

“We will work with you; the success of NPA is our success as well. We commend the NPA for giving us this call-up system.

The story so far has, however, not been enjoyable. We’re hopeful that things will improve very soon,” he said.
Recall that the NPA, on February 27, rolled out an electronic call-up system for trucks dubbed “Eto”, to address the intractable traffic gridlock along the access roads leading to the two major seaports in the Lagos area.

The Tuesday visit to Lilypond Terminal by the Acting Managing Director, his first since he assumed office on May 6, is to enable him assess the quality of equipment so far deployed and identify the necessary measures required, so that the system could be made to achieve its intended objective, NAN learnt.

New Airline, Green Africa Airways, Sells ‘Lagos To Abuja For N16,500’

A Nigerian start-up carrier, Green Africa Airways, has made its entry into Nigerian aviation industry.

The airline on Tuesday commenced sale of flight tickets to travellers who intend making seat reservation on its fleet.

Green Africa Airways had earlier announced an initial route network on which to commence operations.

The network focuses on its Lagos base and comprises six domestic destinations, including Abuja, Port Harcourt, Akure, Ilorin, Enugu and Owerri.

The airline will however commence flight operations begining June 24, its services to customers is currently restricted to ticket sales.

The airline’s flight ticket from Lagos and Abuja and vice-versa for the year cost between N16,500 and N23,000.

The rate is lower when compared to airfare charged by established airlines.

The airline received two ATR 72-600s registered 5N-GAA and 5N-GAE in April.

Both aircraft which were received at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos have a capacity of 70 passengers in an all-economy, 2-2 layout.

Lagos-Ibadan Rail Line To Be Ready In Three Weeks – Amaechi

The Lagos-Ibadan rail line will be ready for formal inauguration and will commence full operation in June, this was disclosed by the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi on Saturday in Ibadan.

The Minister noted that almost 90 percent of the project which is being handled by the Chinese construction firm, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) was ready, he further stated that the rest of the work would be completed in2 to 3 weeks.

Amaechi, who spoke in Ibadan, Oyo State on Saturday after a train ride from Lagos on an inspection of the line, also ordered the arrest of buyers of vandalised rail track facilities and other equipment.

He said he would need to obtain the approval of President Muhammadu Buhari to give the actual date of the inauguration of the line currently on the skeletal service/trial run.

He said, “I hope the office of the President will approve the commissioning of this project in June. We will communicate the actual date in the next one or two weeks but certainly, I think it is in June.

“We are not 100 percent ready for commissioning but we are 89 to 90 percent ready for commissioning and we are hoping that by the next three weeks we will be ready and by then, they will give us a date from the office of the president. One thing is that by the time they give us a date, we will be ready for commissioning.”

The minister also said an e-ticketing platform would be deployed to the Lagos-Ibadan rail in order to manage the envisaged passenger traffic.

“I have directed the MD of NRC to advertise for the e-ticketing and we hope the traffic that we will witness on this axis will be managed with that platform,” he said.

On how the project would be maintained after completion, Amaechi said, “There is a maintenance plan between us and the CCECC within the next three to five years. And by then, I would have left government but for me and within the period I am serving as Minister, there is an agreement between us and the CCECC for the purpose of maintenance.”

The Minister, while commenting on the stealing and vandalization of rail track, said the vandals and buyers of such stolen items must be prosecuted.

He said, “I don’t know why some Nigerians are the way they are. I have told the Managing Director of NRC to arrest the buyers of the equipment. It is not enough to arrest the vandals.

“It is likened to those who said why should the National Assembly punish those who pay ransom. That law was first passed by the Rivers State House of Assembly when I was the Speaker and the reason is that when there is no demand, there will be no supply.

“If we don’t pay ransom, they will be tired and they will stop. The same way, if they don’t buy those metals, nobody will steal them.

“Also, we must approach the judiciary to have a court that can dispense justice readily so that people are sent to jail early enough to deter others and we will also encourage our governors to create jobs.”
