FACT FILE: ‘Nigeria we hail thee’
In the January 1959 edition of the Federal Nigeria Magazine, the National Planning Committee for Independence of the Independence Celebrations Office of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Lagos, 34/36 Ikoyi Road, LAGOS, advertised a competition to select a National Anthem to commemorate independence for the Federation of Nigeria come October 1, 1960.
A prize of £1,000 Nigerian Pounds or ($2,800) was advertised to be paid to any winner, whose anthem will express the spirit of a Nigeria that is free and independent among the countries of the world. The adverts specified that the entries should not be more than three verses of six lines each and it must be in English language. The competition was open to both Nigerians and non-Nigerians living within Nigeria and outside Nigeria. The closing date for entries to the advert was set at March 31, 1959.
By March 31, 1959 a total of 595 entries were received, 45 were selected for finale screening and two of the anthems tied and stood out, ‘Land of Sunshine’ by Dennis Osadebe a Nigerian and ‘Nigeria we hail thee’. The ‘Nigeria, We Hail Thee’ was written by Lillian Jean Williams, a British expatriate who lived in Nigeria, the committee members adjudged her’s to be the best, though with some modifications by the judges.
Lillian Jean Williams was awarded the price money of £1000 and she donated the price money she won to the Nigeria Red Cross Society.
Lillian Jean Williams original anthem
Nigeria, we hail thee
Our own dear native land,
Though tribe and tongue may differ,
In brotherhood we stand,
Nigerians all, and proud to serve
Our sovereign Motherland
Our flag shall be a symbol
That truth and justice reign,
Not blood stained battle honours.
And this we count as gain,
To hand on to our children
A banner without blood stains.
O God of all creation,
Please grant us our request,
Help us to build a nation
Where no man is oppressed,
And so with peace and plenty
Nigeria may be blessed.
By her second stanza Miss Williams wrote: “Not blood stained battle honours” it was edited to read “In peace or battle honoured”
The second line of the third stanza originally read “Please grant us our request” the committee felt it will make Nigeria a week country in the international circle and they edited it to read “Grant this our one request”
The last line of the second stanza was a ‘a banner without blood stains’ and it was modified to read: ‘A banner without stain’. The committee felt that the use of the word without blood stain is like saying that Nigeria will ne be able to fight in any international way of challenged to do so.
Edited and accepted by the Committee
Nigeria, we hail thee
Our own dear native land,
Though tribe and tongue may differ,
In brotherhood we stand,
Nigerians all, and proud to serve
Our sovereign Motherland
Our flag shall be a symbol
That truth and justice reign,
In peace or battle honour’d.
And this we count as gain,
To hand on to our children
A banner without stain.
O God of all creation,
Grant this our one request,
Help us to build a nation
Where no man is oppressed,
And so with peace and plenty
Nigeria may be blessed.
After then another advert was placed asking for music composers that could compose the anthem with the entry of Lillian Jean Williams, again many entries came in on the table of the judges made up of:
Mr. Fela Sowande, Mr. O. Omideyi, Mr. T. K. E. Philips, Mr. W. C. Echazona, Mrs. M. C. Majekodunmi and Mrs. H. Lawson
The closing date for receipt was November 30, 1959, and all entries were acknowledged. Each entry consisted of one complete pianoforte score. No entry was returned and the Federal Government retained the copyright of the composition selected as the National Anthem.
The Panel of six Judges selected the entry of Frances Benda as the winning music, with the same tune for each of the three verses of the Anthem and he was awarded the sum of £1,000 as a prize.

In 1969 the Biafran Head of State Lt. Colonel Odumegwu Ojukwu issued a series of coins of denominations 3d, 6d, 1 shilling and 2/6 shillings, all struck in aluminum. These coins are rare coins as they did not circulate much before the end of the civil war in January of 1970. In the last 7 years I have been in search of the coins. Determination they say is success. As we have only the 6d left. Pls, if u have the Biafran 6d, reach out to us to talk details. I love history.

If you have seen the movie, 'The Woman King', where the ‘Agojie’, an all-female army of the West African kingdom of Dahomey fought and defeated the Oyo Army in 1823, in a battle that was led by General Nanisca, leader of the Agojie. Back then in the 1800’s it was said that the Dahomey Amazons, used Voodoo power because of their dexterity and winning style. That war took place at the sight behind me as you can see in this photo.

As at the time of my visit, the remains of the fence of the Oyo Empire still stood in what is now like a forest in Okuta Kingdom. In this photo, I am standing on the top of Mount Brabakani, 1550 feet above sea level in Okuta Kingdom, Kwara state Nigeria, the back ground you see is Benin Republic the old Dahomey Kingdom.

The mountain also harboured the Armoury of the West African Frontier Force (WAFF). The force was a substantial military force, a multi-battalion field force, formed by the British Colonial Office in 1900 to garrison the West African colonies of Nigeria, Gold Coast, Sierra Leone and Gambia. At the top of the mountain is an armoury measuring about 30/30 meters. It was a defence point against attacks from the Fon Kingdom of Dahomey in the modern Republic of Benin. Until 1894, when King, Béhanzin, was defeated by the French, and Dahomey was annexed into the French colonial empire, Dahomey remained a pain in the neck of Oyo Empire.

When I descended from Mount Brabakani, I walked down to the village of Yakparu still in Okuta Kingdom which is just about 300 meters to Benin Republic. Part of Yakparu village is said to have been claimed and almost annexed by the people of Benin Republic, the inhabitants are worried that their case may end up like the case of Bakasi in Southern Nigeria that was handed over to Cameroun.
I love exploring (Photo credit: Ikemsinachukwu James)
