BADAGRY LAGOON..

Badagry Lagoon is a vital, open tidal water body in Lagos State, Nigeria, connecting inland waterways to Porto-Novo. Historically, it served as a major slave trade transit route where enslaved Africans were ferried across to Gberefu Island's "Point of No Return." Today, it supports local fishing, coconut farming transport, and heritage tourism boat cruises.

Geography and Nature

Location: Situated in the western part of Lagos State, bordering the Benin Republic.
Water type: A shallow tidal estuary with mangrove vegetation.

Salinity: Shifts from fresh water in the rainy season to high brackish levels in the dry season.

History and Tourism
Slave trade route: Enslaved people crossed these exact waters on small boats toward the Atlantic ocean outlet.

Modern activities: Tourists take motorized boat rides from the mainland across the lagoon to Gberefu Island.
Local livelihoods: Nearby riverine communities and local fishers rely on the lagoon for daily fishing and trade.
