It lies along the Gulf of Guinea and a commercial center in the modern nation of Benin, it was one of the most active slave trading ports in all of Africa
The city was the main port of the Kingdom of Dahomey in the 18th and 19th centuries. Portuguese, French, Dutch, Danish, British, and Americans all lived for a share of the slaves and palm-oil trade made available through Ouidah by the efficiently organized and centralized kingdom.
