SECRETS OF AFFILIATE MARKETING

4. Find affiliate programs with Lifetime Commission
When choosing an affiliate product to promote, a good fit with your website topic is essential. Don’t overlook your opportunity to pick the right affiliate program, either.

Commissions can vary widely in affiliate marketing. Try to find so-called ‘’Lifetime commission’’ programs. These affiliate programs do not just provide a single commission for referrals but will keep giving you commission for as long as your referral is a customer.

Lifetime commission programs work on the idea that you persuade your audience to sign up for a subscription. The more referrals you bring in, the bigger the number of recurring commissions you receive each month. These types of programs will help you earn more commissions each month, even without putting more effort into your marketing.

An example of a lifetime commission program is the Supermetrics partner program. This program offers you a 20% recurring commission for each referral you bring in. Supermetrics offers products for reporting automation. Several subscription options are available, making it a great affiliate program to receive a recurring commission.

5. Find discount and coupon offers
Another great tip in the category of affiliate marketing secrets is to offer discount codes to your audience.

The main type of affiliate websites are:

coupon websites,
cashback websites,
comparison websites
and content websites.
With the 27% share, coupon websites are the biggest group of affiliate marketing websites. This is for good reason as discount codes are a great incentive for people to purchase a product (source Hosting Tribunal).

Many affiliate programs hand out discount codes to help convert your audience into paying customers and a discount might just be what makes your reader take the leap to buy the product.

If no discount seems to be available, send an email to your affiliate program manager and you might get lucky with an exclusive promotional code.

6. Promote a trial or free sample
Most people want to have a taste of what they are buying before committing to a larger purchase or subscription.

By promoting a trial or sample of the product, you give your audience the chance to do just that.

For B2B products an impressive average of 66% of trial users convert into paying customers. Promoting free trials is therefore a great way to increase your commissions from referrals (source Marketing Charts).

Most affiliate links leave a cookie, so you will be able to receive a commission for your promotional efforts after the trial. Always check the cookie regulation of your affiliate program to find out when your referral still counts as a sale.

7. Find similar products of competitors
Most affiliate marketers (42%) promote between 1 and 10 products. A smaller group of affiliate marketers (23%) promote even more products with 11 to 20 products (source AffStat)

There are tons of affiliate programs out there waiting for your promotion, but don’t promote everything under the sun. Your goal is to establish yourself as a trustworthy expert in your field.

Promoting non-related products makes you look like a sell-out and will do harm to your business. On the other hand, well-picked products that fit your industry and audience can be a perfect match for bringing you revenue.

If you’re already successful within an affiliate program, do some research on competing products and consider including them in a comparison article. Your audience might be interested in learning more about similar products.

8. Be honest in the weakness of a product
Do not only address the benefits and usability of a product. People get skeptical when reading an article that only describes the product as the perfect solution.

By discussing the weaknesses of a product, you gain trust. Your content will appear more honest and it will give people realistic expectations of the product. Providing well-balanced product information will increase your chances of earning commissions.

9. Focus on mobile conversions
Customers are buying more products online on their phones than ever before. Nowadays 60% of search is done on a mobile device. This high amount of searches means that 45% of digital sales are done on a mobile phone. This is expected to be 54% in 2021. Optimizing your affiliate page for mobile use is, therefore, one of the best-kept affiliate marketing secrets (source Statista).

Besides this, there is a correlation between website loading time and conversion rates. Getting your mobile webpage to load 1 second faster can increase sales conversions by 27%. Websites that load in 3.3 seconds or slower have a 20% higher bounce rate (source QuickSprout).

It is, therefore, crucial to optimize the mobile interface of your affiliate website. Make sure your site has a responsive design, which is built to adjust to different screen sizes. Always check your content on different devices yourself.

SECRETS OF AFFILIATE MARKETING

1. Quality content is King
Did you just create a short review of the benefits of your affiliate product? Don’t kill your credibility with overly promotional reviews. Instead, focus on bringing your clients valuable in-depth product knowledge.

Content-rich articles get better ranking and more organic traffic from Google. There is also a correlation between word count and backlinks to an article. Web pages that rank in Google’s top 10 have an average word count of 2,000 or higher (source QuickSprout).

Quality content with a generous amount of words is therefore important for ranking and bringing potential referrals to your page. One idea is to find product-related questions. Discuss these in an extensive product tutorial. Your best chance to convert your audience into paying customers is to bring real value and address their concerns.

2. Don’t focus only on Google.
So you created a product review on your blog, Awesome! But if you really want to increase your referrals and commissions, don’t rely solely on organic traffic from Google.

The best affiliate marketers make sure that an unexpected penalty from Google will not disrupt their income for the month. That’s why you should also focus on other referral sources such as Social Media, Forum Marketing, Email Marketing, and Video.

Any clients that could benefit from the product? What about a call to action on LinkedIn? The more platforms you use to spread your content, the faster commissions come rolling in.

3. Be dedicated to your promotion
One of the most important affiliate's marketing secrets is that more quality content makes you appear as an expert on the topic.

Once your audience notices the value you bring by addressing their questions, chances are they might come back for more information. Stay in the picture and keep bringing value to them, you might be there when they’re ready to buy a product.

Six Things Successful Affiliate Marketers Do Right

1. Focus on quality leads, not quantity.

One of the biggest mistakes that aspiring affiliate marketers make is ignoring the quality of the clicks or “leads” they receive in favor of quantity. In a bid to generate thousands of clicks and a potential commission, one tactic I often see is the use of automated bots (available from traffic-buying services) to inflate the number of clicks to their links.

2. Put your audience first.

If you’re starting out in affiliate marketing, focus on targeted outreach among communities that are most likely to convert. Engage with audiences that have similar interests to you or have problems that can be solved by your expertise.

Pay attention to discussions on Twitter, Facebook, Quora, Nextdoor, Reddit and other social media platforms and forums. What are people asking about and responding to?

When you’re ready to respond, share your viewpoint and post an affiliate link that points to a solution that can save them time and money.

For instance, if you’re passionate about the outdoors, you probably hang out online with fellow outdoorsy types, sharing experiences and answering questions. People pay attention to you — you’re an influencer! When someone’s looking for a recommendation for new camping gear, you can monetize that status by sharing what worked for you and including an affiliate link to an Orvis or Cabela’s deal page with the brand’s current coupon codes and deals.

Think of your action as word-of-mouth marketing: “You have a problem. Here’s what worked for me!”

3. It’s about conversion rates, not commissions.

The most successful affiliate marketers don’t chase high commission rates; they focus on promoting brands with strong conversion rates. For instance, an affiliate program that pays $1,000 per sale may sound appealing, but if the conversion rate is a mere 0.02%, it would require a huge number of clicks to make any money.

You’re more likely to generate a steady revenue stream by choosing an affiliate program that pays $1 per conversion but converts at 20%. Couple this approach with consistent efforts to grow your circle of followers, and you have the potential for big payouts.

4. Build a subscriber list.

Once you begin to gain traction, look for ways to build your own brand and loyal following. Create a website and/or blog where you can share deals (in a 2018 report, affiliate sites with content and bloggers ranked highest in terms of ad spend by affiliate type, at 39%). Stay connected with followers and grow your revenues further by issuing a weekly or daily newsletter. Give people an incentive to opt in. For example, send out “deal of the day” emails, and add value with tips on how you or others are using the products you promote.

5. Track your efforts.

Like any marketing program, to be successful, you need to know what’s working and what isn’t.

To understand the performance of your affiliate links, use the tools offered by your affiliate network or influencer monetization platform to see what your followers are responding to. As you get more sophisticated, your website, email marketing platform, social media channels and site analytics can also provide insights into how effective your other influencer activities are.

6. Follow the rules.

Be sure to play by the rules. The companies you promote have worked hard to build their brands and are sensitive to how their affiliates promote them online. Don’t make claims about a brand that are untrue and don’t register domain names or build social media landing pages using their trademark names. Another red flag is the use of paid search advertising to promote your affiliate links. Unless you have a direct relationship with a brand and permission to run ads in its name, this is a traffic-generating tactic to avoid.

You must also respect a forum or website’s guidelines when posting affiliate links. If you work through an affiliate network or influencer monetization platform, stick to the established terms and conditions.

Commit to the long haul — it’s worth it.

Affiliate marketing is not a get-rich-quick scheme. It takes commitment and consistency to earn trust and build an affiliate business. The beauty of becoming an affiliate is that the rewards are incremental. Once shared, an affiliate link can continue to perform and earn commissions over time. As search engines index your content and your links are shared, their value will also grow, especially if the link doesn’t expire.

The key is to start small. As you get to know your audience and bring value to the conversation, you’ll earn trust and add to your circle of followers — and your ability to generate revenue will grow.

Remember, brands pay affiliates based on conversions (the percentage of traffic a brand receives that converts to a sale). A bot will never make you money because it doesn’t purchase anything. Instead, concentrate on getting quality, targeted clicks. This leads to my next point.

Here are my top 10 tips that can help you succeed as a business owner:

1. Be passionate about what you are doing
Your daily grind should be one of passion and fun. My brother used to say, “If you do what you LOVE... you’ll always be successful at it."

2. Surround yourself with people that will challenge you, not “yes men”
You need to be able to listen to all sides (pro and con) before you make a decision. Listen to people who give their honest opinion--not those who tell you what they THINK you want to hear. You need to know where the landmines may be before you make a decision. I challenge my people to argue with me, and I really enjoy it. It keeps us all on our toes and makes for some exciting and entertaining staff meetings.

3. Appreciate your people
Your team can make or break you! Many business owners think I spoil my employees. The truth is that without them, we would never be where we are now. As a business owner, I only drive the train, my employees provide the steam to run the engine uphill. To this day, I still look for those diamonds in the rough!

4. Always consider your customer’s point of view
This is valuable for everything from marketing promotions to problem resolution. It’s not that the “customer is always right,” but it is important to put yourself in their shoes and treat them like you would want to be treated if the roles were reversed.

5. Be a value to your suppliers
No matter what industry you’re in, it is important to establish bonds with those you do business with. Ask yourself what you are bringing to the table and remember that you both need each other. TALK to them, get to know them--don’t just email or text them. In a pinch, they can help you.

6. Appreciate your competitors
Seems odd, right? But our competitors keep us on our toes and inspire us to do better every day. Many of them I now consider my friends, and we formed a strong alliance with a common goal to keep industry ethics on track. We typically have the same problems, and there really is strength in numbers!

7. Have an exit strategy
Realize that at some point, you need to either sell your company or pass your business on to a loved one. Create a succession plan within your organization. You need to recognize that when the time comes, you must protect your legacy and maximize your years of hard work. For me, that was two years ago when I sold my controlling interest in CruCon to a $2B company. I then created SLC Group Holdings to invest in and mentor young entrepreneurs and help make all their dreams come true!

8. Build a strong support system
Everyone needs a support system because you will have times when you just don’t see the light. Crap happens. So, you need someone there to pump you back up and give you renewed confidence. I couldn’t have gotten to where I am today without the support and unwavering trust of my SLC Group Holdings staff, as well as the unconditional love of 22 little feet that meet me at the door every night with tails wagging - my four tiny Maltese girls, my cat (Finney), and, of course, my Bruce! It doesn’t matter how bad the day was, they (and a lemon drop martini) make it all better.

9. Pick yourself up when you fall down
Use your support system from number eight! You WILL make mistakes. We all do. Don’t blame someone else for them. Own them. They are yours. Recovering from our mistakes quickly and learning a lesson makes us stronger and wiser in our decisions going forward.

10. Whenever possible, pay it forward
It’s tough when you first start out to donate to charities or volunteer within your community because you don’t have money or time, but once you have some breathing room, it’s an important thing to do. Businesses are the pillars of their communities. Give something back. Your community needs it. It brings you new employees and retains old ones because they are proud of where they work. You never know when you may need their support for something. Plus, it brings good Karma, too!

How does affiliate marketing work?

The merchant gives each affiliate a unique link so they can track who was responsible for a sale. The link will usually look something like this:

When someone clicks that link, a small file called a cookie gets stored on their device.

An affiliate cookie does two things:

It helps the merchant attribute the sale back to the right person;
It (usually) holds an expiration date, so you get paid even if the buyer delays their purchase.
Here’s an example of how this works.

Imagine that a reader visits your post about the best winter jackets. They click on one of your affiliate links, leading them to a product on Amazon.

But they realized they have to pick up their daughter from school. So they leave their house, pick up their daughter, have dinner, and then finally go back to Amazon where they find the product again.

Since they’re already shopping on Amazon, they decide to purchase some ski gear too.

Here’s the good news. Earlier, they clicked on your affiliate link and a cookie was stored on their device. Because Amazon has a 24-hour cookie duration, you get compensated for both the winter jacket and ski gear—even though you didn’t promote the latter.

What is affiliate marketing?

Affiliate marketing is where you promote another company’s product or service in return for a commission on the sales you generate. Commissions are typically a percentage of the sale price, but can occasionally be a fixed amount.

Why do affiliate marketing?
Here are two reasons why you should consider doing affiliate marketing:

1. Low-cost and low-risk

Starting a business means incurring upfront costs for products, employees, equipment, rent, and so on. This makes it risky and expensive. With affiliate marketing, all you need is a website. Even if it doesn’t work out, all you’ve wasted is time and a little bit of money.

2. Easy to scale

A typical salesperson only sells products from one company. As an affiliate marketer, you can promote products from many different companies and earn commissions from all of them.

Affiliate Marketing tip #2

Track your affiliate marketing success

Ongoing success needs insights as to what has worked in the past. While you do not want to set it and forget it - knowing how visitors engage with your site is important. Obviously, search ranking will have an impact, as will social sharing, etc.

You need to use your visitor analytics to learn more about your visitors. What percentage are new versus returning visitors? What pages get the majority of your traffic? What links in your navigation bar and other places on each page get clicked? All these questions will provide answers that you can use to improve and add actions.

Where is your converting traffic coming from? What pages are visited most before a conversion? Use your analytics to get answers you can use to determine what new content is needed or even where to place certain links on existing pages. Use your data!
