The to***co grown in our volcanic soil and perfect weather is highly sought after; just another reason why this country is quickly becoming a tourist destination for all types of travelers.

If you want to see what all of the hype is about, come with us to tour a cigar factory in the picturesque city of Granada. You can watch and learn how premium ci**rs are made and may even have the chance to roll your own under the watchful eye of one of their Master Blenders!

Do you know how to make a solar oven out of a pizza box?? Our local school children do!!!

Thanks to the teachers and students from Carlow University, children from four of the local communities surrounding Gran Pacifica learned the importance of staying hydrated, how to properly brush their teeth, how to prepare and cook a pizza, and how much fun it is to eat a pizza cooked with only solar power!

The kids then showed their affection to their visitors by painting them beautiful abstract paintings and sharing their laughter with us during the fabulous magic show, courtesy of Kevin Spencer!

Thank you to the Carlow University volunteers for another wonderful visit! Carlow Cares: Nicaragua is truly a special program designed to offer students a meaningful way to spend their spring break. We can't wait to have you back again next year!!

We are coming to the end of our 4th annual Medical Mission in conjunction with our partners at Help Them Help Themselves and Travel To Do Good. This time around, we focused on the local school children & workers at Gran Pacifica.

Over 165 children at Zapote and El Rosario schools were gifted toothbrushes, tooth paste, & coloring books/crayons, after receiving educational classes on the importance of staying hydrated, general hygiene, sanitation, nutrition, & how to properly care for their teeth.

Gran Pacifica Resort employees, who have previously been unable to attend Medical Missions in the past due to their work schedules, were provided check-ups & extractions when needed.

As you can see from the smiling faces in the photos, this Medical Mission was a huge success and impacted many people. We’d like to thank all of the volunteers involved in this mission, included seasoned traveler Dr. Sylvia Gates Carlisle, Dentist Michael Ward, Dr. Donald, and Dr. Andrea Martinez Zapatier. Also a big shout-out to Roslyn Parker at Travel to do Good, and our dedicated volunteer residents at Gran Pacifica; Becky, Denise, Merle Peters, Natalie, MikeandCindie, and Holly. Together, we can make a difference!

If you’re interested in joining us on a mission in the future, email us at [email protected].

Eye exams for children are extremely important! About 5 to 10 percent of preschoolers and 25 percent of school-aged children have vision problems. A child who is unable to see, print, or view a blackboard can become easily frustrated which can lead to poor academic performance. All of which can easily be fixed if tested and identified early on.

Thanks to the project named “Operation Blackboard” started by Ramya Vemulapalli, over 350 local village children and teachers were able to get their vision tested for free. Last June, the group of Ophthalmologist volunteers visited 4 local schools surrounding Gran Pacifica Resort. Not only did they donate their time by giving exams, but upon returning to the states they made over 85 prescription glasses to those students and teachers in need.

Gran Pacifica Resort owners Don, Ellen, and Emily Roose helped organize the initial trip, and then returned to Nicaragua earlier this year with those 85+ glasses just in time for the school year. It was a privilege for us to be able to participate in handing out those prescription glasses to each individual student.

A big thanks to Ramya Vemulapalli, Rani Makkapati, El Roose, and Emily Roose. Your contribution to the local community has a great impact on the quality of life for those most in need. Thank you!

We are grateful to Carlow University faculty members Kevin Spencer, Susan O'Rourke, and a handful of students who allowed us and our partners, Help Them Help Themselves and Gran Pacifica, to be a part of a beautiful service project. Faculty members and students came to our partners’ clinic to provide counseling for the parents of children with various disabilities.

The local families came from all over the Nicaraguan municipality of Villa El Carmen to meet the Carlow group who helped them to become better skilled with their day to day routine. The group gave the families some tools and techniques to use in the future.

We were touched by these families and the children that we were able to spend the day with. They were positive, loving, and appreciative. Are you interested in becoming involved with a volunteer project where you can impact others’ lives? Contact us, we'd love to assist you in ironing out the details of your future volunteer trip to Nicaragua. Email us at [email protected].

Can you imagine not having running water? Walking 15 minutes to the nearest well and then carrying a bucket of water on your head, back to your house to take a bath? Or to wash your clothes, wash your dishes, or even to just have water to drink!?

For about 25 families in Piedras Pesadas, this has been their norm. But not anymore; the construction of the first communal well is in progress, and they are close to reaching water for the first time! This is a BIG DEAL for this community! Thanks to our partners at Help Them Help Themselves, the generous donations from the Study Abroad Group of Carlow University and from the Heartland Choir group of Des Moines, and various contributions given by Gran Pacifica residents. Thanks to you, these families lives will be forever changed!
